  • Nature of injury and external cause of injury. These are different. Treated as one table in intelliHealth.
  • Nature of injury available as most responsible diagnosis (MRD).
  • External causes are never MRD. Available only in IP and AM table.
  • Vital stats only provide external cause of death.
  • Home care uses ICD-9.
  • CIHI developed injury blocks.
  • Be mindful of double counting when using external causes.
  • Shared experience working with injury data.
  • APHEO indicators not mutually exclusive.
  • Inconsistency in codes between mortality and hospitalization in the ICD-10 and ICD-10CA.
  • Different groups use different classifications.
Used external causes matrix ICECI. (International Classification of External Causes of Injury)
  • Consider other sources of data such as Smartrisk and Health Reports.
  • Discuss what to include and exclude in injury codes.
  • May consider new indicator – leading cause of injury.
  • Participating hospitals have access to the data.
  • Parents complete the form.
  • KRISP available in Suzanne’s area.
