Principals Message
I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received since arriving at Kent Heights. This is an incredible school community filled with wonderful students, parents and a highly dedicated staff. I feel[MC1]extremely fortunate for this opportunity. Thank you all.
I am amazed by the teachers and staff her[MC2]e at KHS. You cannot believe the time and effort they put in to ensure that your children receive the highest quality education possible. We not only want to prepare them academicallybut also socially and emotionally. We are striving to prepare them for success in the future.
As you know school is more than academics. It is about educating the whole child academically, socially and emotionally. We want to create good citizens who are capable of accomplishing great things. With that in mind we continue to guide your children through the Kent Heights PBIS slogan (KHS), Kind, Hardworking and Safe. You can see and hear this in everything we do. When I walk through the building I see our students demonstrating these words in all their daily actions.
In our efforts to reach out and help people in need as good citizens do[MC3]and in conjunction with our Feinstein Good Deeds program, we were able to raise $257.19 for the Make a Wish Foundation. Thank for all your generosity.
A couple of quick reminders: [MC4]
- Remember that if your child is late you need to escort them into the building.
- Please make every effort to contact the school if your child is going to be late or absent.
- When dismissing your child please make sure that you have a valid ID with you. You cannot count on staff knowing who you are. Policies and procedures are in place to ensure the safety of all children at KHS. Also please try to call in advance if you are dismissing your child early.
PTA
Kent Heights has a very active and engaged PTA. They are here to support this school community in everything they do and with anything that we need. I am very grateful for all that they do.
To date the PTA has purchased fans to help cool off the classrooms during the hot days of August and September. The[MC5]y sponsored Keith Munslow, who welcomed your children to school on the first dayof school, coordinated the recent Harvest Hop[MC6]and are always looking to find ways to support our school community. These are just a few of the ways that the PTA helps to improve the culture of this community. We want and need parents to be involved, so please do. Any little bit that you can do is greatly appreciated. Please contact Mellissa Pearson, PTA President at 401-338-4430.[MC7]
Academics
We have begun to pilot new curricula’s in ELA K-5 that is linked to the Common Core Standards. K-2 is Amplify and 3-5 is Expeditionary Learning. If you have any questions regarding any of your child’s academics do not hesitate to contact us. I understand that we are constantly assessing your children. Please understand that we use the data collected from these assessments to help drive our instruction and better support your child.
Just an FYI, grades close Friday, October 30th with report cards being sent home on Friday. November 6th.
State Testing
Science NECAP
Science NECAP results are in. We will send the results home with the report cards. Please remember that Science NECAPtesting is for 4th grade students only. I am very proud to report that our students made significant growth. Congratulations to you as parents, teachers and of course students. 49% of the 4th grade students at KHS were proficient on the Science NECAP. This was an increase of 23%[MC8] when compared to 2013-2014 results. This puts KHS students above District and State averages!!!
PARCC
Results from 2014 – 2014 should be available over the next weeks. As soon as I’m able to share that information with you I will.
