Unit:The Life of David
Lesson 1:David annointed King
Scripture:1 Samuel 17:34-37, 16:1-13
Objective:That the children will conclude that God has a purpose for them and is preparing them for future service, if they belong to Him.
That the children will implement the Gospel into their lives and choose to live in a Godly fashion.
Introduction to Create Engagement:
Long ago, a father, Jesse, had eight sons (Count picture)
Fathers don’t mean to play favorites – the oldest was the most
important
The name of the youngest was David
Part 1: David’s Job was to care for the sheep
This was an important job because David was important to God. God often gives us tasks in life that help us learn about ourselves and grow. This job helped David reflect on his relationship with God and he found that he was wanting. David was a sinner, just as you and I are sinners.
“The wages of Sin is death.” Romans 3:23 (teach on the characteristics of sin)
David would be alone with the sheep, so he had time to think. He learned to play a harp, shoot a sling, and he thought about God. He even wrote songs about God that are still used today.
One time a lion came for a lamb, but David hit him on the head
and pulled his beard.
Another time a bear came, but David killed him, too.
State Objective: God was preparing David for the future, just as God is preparing you. (Teaching Point)
Part 2: Samuel was a priest and a prophet
“Fill thy horn with oil, and go. I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.”
Samuel went to Jesse and Jesse presented his seven sons. (Count picture)
Oldest was the most important – Eliab
“I have not chosen Eliab, for I am not looking at his face. I do not care how tall he is. I look deeper. I look at the heart. You are looking at the outward appearance.”
State Objective: God is preparing you. He wants to prepare your heart. (Teaching Point)
Abinadab
Shammah
Sons 4, 5, 6, 7
Samuel was surprised when none where chosen. None had a right relationship with God.
II Corinthians 5:21 & Jn. 10:11 “I am the Good Shephered. The Good
Shephered gave his life for the sheep.” Jesus gave his life for you and can forgive you of your sins, making your right with God. (Teaching Point)
Are there any more sons? Samuel asked.
“There is just the youngest, and he keepeth the sheep.”
“Send and fetch him: for we will no sit down till he comes.”
When David came, God said, “Arise, anoint him: for this is he.”
Part 3: God continued to prepare David
Did David go right to the Palace? No, it wasn’t God’s way. David was a lamb of God, and God wanted to prepare him for his future.
State Objective: God is preparing you. When you are his lamb, he wants to prepare you for your future. (Teaching Point)
It took many years before David became king. He wrote:
“The Lord is my Shepherd: I shall not want!
John 1:12 “But as many as receive him, to them gave he the power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
