BANKARD FUND FOR POLITICAL ECONOMY
REQUEST FOR FACULTY RESEARCH PROPOSALS
A.Background of the Fund: The Bankard Fund for Political Economy was established by gifts from Merrill H. Bankard and his wife, Georgia S. Bankard. Upon establishment, the donors specified that income from the Fund supplement state appropriations and be used only for scholarly enrichment. Income from the Fund should generate approximately $1200,000 annually.
B.Objectives of the Fund: Income from the Fund is to be used exclusively for the support of research programs at the University of Virginia which will have the greatest possible influence upon the development and continuation of the public policy necessary for a healthy private business system and a healthy national economy. To meet this objective, the Fund seeks research proposals from "...scholars of very high reputation and credibility, whose work will promote the objective of the Bankard Fund."
C.Procedures: Seven (7) copies of a proposal, not to exceed ten (10) pages in length [for items (b) through (f) ], excluding attachments, should present a plan and justification for the proposed research. Faculty members may request one or two years of funding, although most projects are one-year projects. Two-year project proposals should include with a detailed budget included for each year. EachThe proposal should also include:
(a)Cover sheet (form attached);
(b)Statement of the research problem;
(c)Discussion of its background and significance;
(e)Relationship of the proposed research to the public policy criteria
of the Bankard Fund;
(f)Description of the methodology or research design;
(g)Timetable for the research;
(h) Other sources of funding you have applied for to support this project (if any) and status of those applications.
(hi)Detailed budget (form attached) and budget footnotes;
and
(ij)Attachments [bibliography, curriculum vitae(clearly distinguishing publications within the past five years)], and publications for
last five years only).
(k) Applicants who have previously received Bankard funding must include progress reports for their two most recent Bankard projects, including a list of publications arising from Bankard funded research.
D.Eligibility: Any full-time faculty member at the University of Virginia, except members of the Bankard Committee and those who have been supported by Bankard grants both in 2000-1 and in 2001-2, is eligible to apply. Faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, particularly the Departments of Economics, Government and Foreign Affairs, and History, may be most interested in submitting proposals, while faculty from Commerce, Darden and Law may likewise have an interest.
E. Additional Considerations :
1. Budgets are limited to $25,000 per year for projects proposed by one faculty member, and $40,000 per year for projects proposed by more than one faculty member.
2. Faculty are encouraged to include funding for graduate research assistants in their budgets.
3. Recipients of Bankard grantsare required to acknowledge Bankard funding on publications and other outcomes of Bankard-sponsored research.
