Re:Marion Campus Recycling Grants and Program
The Marion Campus of north-central Ohio is shared by Ohio State University at Marion (OSU Marion) and Marion Technical College (MTC). The co-located institutions recently took the initiative to implement a campus-wide recycling program.
In 2011 and 2012, the Marion campus applied for recycling grants from Delaware-Knox-Marion-Morrow (DKMM) Solid Waste Management District and filed with Larry Cooper, District Director.
The purpose of the grants was to extend the small recycling program that was underway in offices and expand the collection into classrooms and labs for all campus buildings. The grants would include a website created on the OSU Marion and MTC home pages to make students and staff aware of the campus recycling program. In addition, signage and decals were designed by a local vendor and installed on all recycling containers and around the campus. The program is called All-In-One, where the collection of paper & newspaper, plastic & glass, aluminum & metal, and cardboard can be disposed of in any campus recycling container.
In 2011, the Marion campus received $2,600 in grant funds from DKMM to purchase 50 medium recycling containers for classrooms and labs, five 60-gallon containers to begin the outside recycling program on campus, and All-In-One printed decals & signage for all classroom and office recycling containers.
In 2012, the Marion campus received another $1,840.00 in grant funds from DKMM to purchase additional recycling containers for the campus grounds and for classrooms/labs in the new Health Technologies Center (HTC) building on the east side of campus. In addition, blue recycling collection carts for the dock areas in all campus buildings were purchased for housekeeping to have a central drop off point for recycled materials that were collected in each campus building.
OSU Marion and MTC used $4,568 of cost-share funds to add with the FY2011 grant funds to purchase additional recycling containers, All-In-One decals, and collection carts.
Records and purchase orders were provided to DKMM in a final report for the each grant year and the DKMM Director visited the campus to view the containers that were purchased and to hear about the success of the program. Over all the campus increased recycling by several tons per year due to the awareness program and the new containers.
The Marion Campus recycling program initiated by the DKMM grants continues on campus today. The campus sustainability operations have benefited greatly by this joint campus and local district waste management partnership and associated grant funding.
