Mrs. Boundy’s Homework Policy

Homework in fourth grade is primarily practice and review of previously learned skills. It can help students develop a routine and grow as responsible students. Occasionally, it will give the students an opportunity to think about a topic before we discuss it in further depth in class. I hope that you will help reinforce the importance of nightly homework with your child.

The following explains the homework policy for my classroom. Please read the policy with your child so that you understand the expectations of students and parents with regard to homework. Following these guidelines can help decrease tension associated with homework and increase your child’s overall learning.

For your child to be successful with homework he/she needs:
1. A place to do homework: If possible, your child should do his homework in the same place (an uncluttered, quiet space).

2. A schedule for completing homework: If possible, set a homework time that is consistent each day (right after school, after dinner, after an afternoon snack etc.)

3. Encouragement, motivation and prompting: At the beginning it may be necessary to sit with your child as they do their homework. However, your child needs to develop independence, so please remember to allow you child some space to practice their skills independently. If your child cannot consistently complete homework assignments alone, please contact me at school.

4. Reasonable time expectations: In the beginning, it may take your child longer to complete the assignments. Ideally it should take your child no more than twenty minutes to complete the written homework each night. If your child seems to be spending too much time each night on homework please contact me.

5. A bedtime: When it is time to go to bed, please stop your child, even if he or she has not finished their homework.

6. Grading: While homework is not graded, I do expect it to be done neatly, in pencil and handed in the next day unless otherwise specified. Spelling packets are due on Friday.

Please sign and return the checklist page to school acknowledging that you have read and discussed the policy with your child. If you have any questions about homework expectations please contact me.
