SUMMER 2 0 15 – E D I T I O N ELEVEN

PRINCIPAL’s MESSAGE

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The last day of school June 2015 will mark the last day at Green Glade Sr. P.S. of Ms. Attia. Ms. Attia has been our Behavioural Teaching Assistant for the past several years and she has touched the lives of many students in our community. On behalf of the staff and community, we wish Ms. Attia all the best as she moves forward to Centennial Sr. P.S. and onto the next chapter in her career.

Next Year, we are also saying a fond farewell to Ms. Warren. During the 2015- 2016 school year, she will be enjoying some time with her family. We will miss her numerous contributions both within and outside the classroom and wish her well. She will be returning to Green Glade Sr. P.S. ready to take on her teaching responsibilities in September 2016.

This is also a great time to thank the many different members of our Green Glade Sr. P.S. staff that ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students.

We thank ouroffice staff Mrs. Ciotti and Mrs. Jakubyzck and Mrs. Maiatico for all that they do to help keep the school running smoothly. They are the smiling faces you see when you first enter our school and they certainly help to promote a welcoming environment for students, parents and staff that reflects our school’s commitment to caring.

We thank our custodial staff Mr. Hilts, Mrs. Olkowska, Mrs. Toteda for all their continued excellent work in keeping Green Glade P.S. a safe and clean place to work and learn. Our building and our gardens sparkles like they were brand new.

The teachers and teaching assistants at Green Glade Sr. P.S. are second to none! They go above and beyond to help all the students they teach and support succeed. Because of them, students have had many fantastic learning experiences this year. We appreciate all that you do for our school!

The students and parents of Green Glade Sr. P.S. are the heart and soul of our school. You exemplify our caring values each and every day. Thank you to students for all your hard work this year and to parents for your commitment to supporting education in partnership with our staff.

We extend a special thanks to Superintendent P. Rossall and Trustee MacDonald for their ongoing support of and dedication to our school and the community.

Our Amazing Quebec City Experience

In early November, you all received a letter about the upcoming Quebec trip for Grade Sevens. It sounded fun and interesting- exploring Old Quebec with a tour guide to lead you around, visiting historic sites and places that your child(ren) has/have learned about in their History classes. You thought “this sounds like a memorable and educational experience for my child(ren), as well as a lot of fun. It should be great! You turned the page to find out more… and there it is, in bold letters all over the page. Cost is 645 dollars. ‘SIX HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE DOLLARS?!?’ you thought. “Now I’m having second thoughts for sure.’ But after much pleading and begging, you finally gave in. Grudgingly, you sent your 12 or 13 year old off on a four day adventure 200 kilometres away. And after they come back, you ask ‘Was it worth it?’ You are handed a couple souvenirs to examine. Your question still unanswered, you display the souvenirs on a shelf so they can sit and collect dust in the years to come.

However, you don’t have to worry about wasting your money on an unexciting and dull trip. I can tell you firsthand that the GradeSeven Quebec Trip was an unforgettable experience well worth a thousand dollars. The departure on Tuesday was uneventful, as was the drive up. We sang songs and chatted amongst ourselves, eagerly anticipating the arrival in Quebec. At around six, we finally made it! We spent the rest of the evening exploring Old Quebec with a detailed tour from our amazing tour leaders, Meagan and Leah. Then we went back to our splendid hotel rooms and ‘slept’ until 7:30 the next morning. On Wednesday we were (mostly) all on our buses at 7:40. We departed by 7:50 and went off to explore. We had a thrilling day around old and new Quebec, learning more about historic sites we saw in textbooks before. We visited the Falls de Saint-Marie-Anne, and took some amazing pictures of them too! After an exhausting day, we slept soundly again. Then, on our last full day, we got to experience the thrill of being soldiers in New Frances Army! We had to learn about all of the soldier’s different tasks and completeing them- or risk learning about the punishments the soldiers had to endure, too. After some souvenir shopping, we went to dinner and the dance- the most anticipated part of the trip by far. Everyone had a great time clicking their heels off, and we ‘slept’ soundly again. On Friday we sang and laughed all the way home. I’m sure we all would love to go again and enjoyed the trip immensely.

Let’s Buzz to “Bee” Victorious

Spelling; it’s a common part of everyone’s everyday lives. It’s important to the point that if I couldn’t spell, you wouldn’t be able to understand a word I was saying. However, spelling can get a bit too difficult when you don’t have autocorrect to fix your mistakes. Last week Green Glade took part in its very first annual “Spelling Bee” and let me tell you, it was a thrill to watch. Our very own Gators spend long and hard hours training their vocabulary to exceed the expectations of their fellow students and teachers. We started off by running a mini “Bee” in our very own classrooms, where someone was chosen to represent their class in a “Grand Spelling Bee!” After thirteen incredible and talented spellers were chosen from every class, it was going to be time for them to “sting” the competition. Did you see what I did there? Student Council leaders were chosen to for many different jobs in the Spelling Bee: Pronouncer, the person who says the work to the students and gives them a sentence with the word in it if needed; the recorder, the one who keeps track of the mistakes and corrections of each speller; and of course the time keeper. Each speller had 60 seconds to take a shot in spelling their tricky words. They would first say the word, to notify the pronouncer that they are spelling the correct word, spell the word, then say the word again, to notify to the judges that they have completed the spelling of the word.. After fourteen difficult, nail biting roundsonly two spelling geniuses remained: John from 7-2 and Zaina from 8-4. They both spelled with incredible intelligence, but in the end Zaina took victory beating John with the word “calendar.” If it were me up there I would also stress whether it was an “ar” or “er” at the end of that. Other words that the contestants had to spell included furrow, manor, delivery, beliefs and loaves. All in all it was a great way to start off the day and to end the year with. A special thanks to Mrs. Adamson for running all of the Spelling Bee. Also, a huge thanks to Ms Warren and Mrs. Brockie for ringing the ding out of that bell and being wonderful judges, and to our two hilarious MCs, Moazzam and Alex, your corny spelling jokes were the highlight of the assembly!

What a huge success and a great idea on behalf of our student body. I’d like to leave you off with a quote by AA Milne. “My spelling is wobbly. It’s good spelling, but it wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.” So come one Green Glade step out of your comfort zone and justkeep spelling, just keep spelling!
