Recipe for Kool-Aid Playdough

This is a simple recipe for a colourful, fruit-scented playdough. It stores well in a zip-lock bag for up to two months.

Ingredients:

•1 1/4 cup flour
•1/4 cup salt
•1 pkg. unsweetened Kool-Aid
•1 cup boiling water
•1 1/2 tbsp. vegetable oil

Directions: In a bowl, mix flour, salt and Kool-Aid powder. Stir in water and oil. Knead with your hands for about 5 minutes.

Ideas to Get You Started:

·  Help your child roll some dough between his or her hands to make “ropes”. Then have fun forming the ropes into letters.

·  Flatten some dough with a small rolling pin. Cut out letter shapes using a butter knife or cookie cutters (available at some cooking or craft stores).

·  Help your child model a piece of dough into objects to match different letters in the alphabet, such as an airplane for “A” or a bird for “B”.

Like Magic!

Here’s a fun idea to try. Prepare both coloured and uncoloured playdough (leave out the Kool-Aid). Wrap uncoloured playdough around small balls of coloured playdough and give a “magic ball” to your child. Ask your child to squeeze the playdough and recite:

My ball of playdough is so white,

I’ll squeeze and squeeze with all my might.

Until, like magic, I can see,

Another colour – what will it be?

Watch your child’s face as the squeezing action brings colour to the outer layer!
Balls of “magic dough”, along with a copy of the poem, make a fun and inexpensive party favour.
