Tri Annual Summary Report for Richland R-1 District Wellness Program
2017-2018
The general public and the school community (including parents, students, and representatives of the school food authority, teachers of physical education, school health professionals, the school board, and school administrators) are encouraged to participate in the wellness policy process. Wellness Committee meetings are scheduled for: 8/11/2017 and 5/11/2017.
The goal of this summary is to report on the district wide compliance of the Richland R-1 District Wellness Program.
This report addresses the following:
- Baseline assessment of the following indicators: School Health Index (SHI), Body Mass Index (BMI) of students, student absenteeism, and number of staff who participates in training and development related to student wellness.
- Impact of the policy change on these indicators
- Report of progress
- Steps for moving to the next priority
- Work plans for the next year
- Recommended policy revisions
1. Baseline assessment of indicators:
School Health Index (SHI):TheSchool Health Index (SHI): Self-Assessment & Planning Guide 2014is an online self-assessment and planning tool implemented by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs.The Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program has adopted CDC’s School Health Index as its assessment tool to help schools assess their current policies and practices as well as track progress over time.Richland R-1 School District scores high in every area assessed (81-100%). See the attached Overall Scoreboard for reference.
Body Mass Index (BMI) of students: All Richland R-1 Students participate in an annual health screening conducted by the school nurse. BMI is part of the screening. For the school year 2016-2017, 85% of Richland students were at a healthy and normal BMI.
Student Absenteeism: For school year 2016-2017, District wide student absenteeism rate for Richland is 92.946 % compared to Missouri average rate of 85.17%.
Number of staff who participates in training and development related to student wellness: All Richland R-1 staff participates in annual training for student wellness. Development of student wellness involves the Wellness Committee (school nurse, food service director, principals, and superintendent) who meet annually.
2. Impact of the policy change on indicators:
The primary goals of Richland R-1 School District Wellness Program are to promote student health, reduce student overweight/obesity, facilitate student learning of lifelong healthy habits and increase student achievement. Richland has met or exceeded each of these goals. Richland’s SHI score is in the high range which indicates Richland is successfully supporting and promoting student health. 85% of Richland students have a healthy BMI which indicates Richland is helping students maintain a healthy lifestyle by decreasing student overweight/obesity. Annual health and wellness training is providing to all staff which indicates Richland facilitates learning of lifelong healthy habits. The correlation between absenteeism and student achievement is well documented. Richland has a 92.946% attendance rate for 2015, higher than Missouri’s average of 85.17% which indicates Richland is increasing student achievement.
3. Report of Progress:
For the 2016-2017 school year, based off of assessed indicators, Richland has met or exceeded its goals.
4. Steps for Moving to the Next Priority:
Using the School Health Index (SHI), the next priority for the Wellness Committee will be:
- Additional programs to support farm to school
- Increase support of students walking/biking to and from school
5. Work plans for next year:
The Wellness Committee will continue to meet annually and review and provide policy revision requests to the School Board. The next tri-annual summary will be 2020-2021 school year. May 11th, 2017 is the next scheduled Wellness Committee Meeting.
6. Recommended policy revisions:
Include the Back Pack for Friday Program in nutrition promotion/education.
