COURSE INFORMATION

Math 127 – Precalculus 1

Topics include an in-depth investigation of trigonometric functions and their graphs, analytic trigonometry, solutions of triangles, vectors and analytic geometry. This course is a Jumpstart Dual Credit Course. The Jumpstart Program allows you to earn credit for Math 127 through CSN while earning your high school math credit for Precalculus for the cost of $66.50. This course satisfies or partially satisfies the mathematics component of a degree or certificate program at CSN.

Prerequisite: Math 126 with a grade of C or better, ACT score of 25, SAT score of 550, or placement by the Accuplacer Test.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Analyze trigonometric and parametric function properties.

2. Graph trigonometric and parametric functions.

3. Verify trigonometric identities.

4. Solve trigonometric and parametric equations.

5. Solve triangles using the Laws of Sines and Cosines.

6. Analyze the concepts of vectors and polar coordinates.

7. Investigate properties of conic sections.

8. Apply and extend all concepts.

REQUIRED AND OPTIONAL MEDIA AND TOOLS

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Precalculus, Sullivan & Sullivan. If the book is lost or stolen, a replacement will cost $101.53. If the book needs repair, a portion of the total cost will be requested.

REQUIRED CALCULATOR: A scientific calculator is required for class. You may use a scientific calculator on all tests and the Final Exam. You may NOT use a graphing calculator or a cell phone as a calculator on any test or the Final Exam. You may NOT share a calculator during any test or the Final Exam.

POLICIES ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND/OR MAKE-UP WORK

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned each class. The homework assignment is due at the beginning of class on the next class day. Late homework will be accepted for a maximum 50%. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the calendar posted in class or online for the make-up assignment.

TESTS AND QUIZZES: There will be 4 tests each semester and numerous quizzes. If you are absent for a quiz or test, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to make up the quiz or test during class. Quizzes and tests are the largest component of your grade. It is imperative that you study for the quizzes and tests. If you are not prepared for a quiz or test, please speak with me before the quiz or test. No re-take quizzes or tests will be given for any reason

*NOTE: There will be a 10-point weekly preparedness/participation assignment that includes arriving to class on time, following class rules, in-class effort, and class preparedness. Students will start each week with 10 points for this assignment. Students will lose 2 points for each tardy, each demonstration of lack of participation, and each time they are unprepared for class.

*NOTE: Each quiz will be worth 50 pts, each test will be worth 200 pts, and the CSN Final Exam will be worth 300 pts.

*Cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed out during class. If your cell phone is out during class, you are demonstrating a lack of participation which will be reflected in your Participation Grade.

NOTE: The grade of “W” will NOT be given by the instructor. If you would like to get a “W” in the course, you must withdraw from the class on or before March 31, 2017 through MyCSN.

DESCRIPTION OF ATTENDANCE POLICY

We will follow the attendance policy and tardy policy as outlined in the student handbook. Students who are more than 30 minutes late to class shall be counted absent for the class. You are responsible for all of the information in every class. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get any information and notes from another student in class.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

Quizzes, tests, and the final exam are to be completed independently with no aid from other students, books, notes, cell phones, iPods, computers, etc. Dishonest work will result in a zero and the student will not be allowed to re-take the quiz, test, or final exam.
