1. What is living sustainably and how does it relate to the analogy of "living off the principle instead of living off the interest"? What changes are needed to approach this ideal?
2. What role(s) do poverty and the standard of living play in addressing environmental problems on a global level? What actions will need to be taken to begin to address these critical issues?
3. Identify and explain at least three distinct reasons why more scientists and engineers are needed in developing countries. What steps are needed in order to make this a possibility?
4. Based on the U.S. ratification of international treaties on environmental issues, would you say that the U.S. is taking a leadership role in protection of the environment in the international/global arena? Justify your answer.
5. Identify and discuss the measures that we will need to implement in order for the human population to stay within the Earth's carrying capacity for our species.
6. Describe the role of education in changing individual values, attitudes, and practices toward a healthier global environment.
7. What is living sustainably? Is it more critical to educate residents of highly developed or developing countries with respect to living sustainably? Justify your response.
8. Why is it important for communities to take responsibility for their own (local) environments if our goal is to improve the global environment? Provide a few examples to support your answer.
9. What is the role of national governments in approaching sustainable global development? What changes or support are needed for them to be effective?
10. Identify three international treaties on the environment and briefly explain the intended goal of each. Note the ratification status of each treaty for the United States and briefly discuss the international/global implications.
11. Why is a global alliance needed for sustainable development? What are the difficulties involved in developing this alliance? What are some ways in which these difficulties might be overcome?
