Course Description
This interactive, hands–on course provides Community Health Workers (CHA/Ps, CHRs, BHAs, CWAs, and village-based health educators) with the skills, support, and confidence to share wellness presentations in their community. The nine wellness topics are: self-care, physical activity, fat and cholesterol, healthy weight, salt and blood pressure, tobacco cessation, breast health, cervicalhealth, and colorectal health. Course content also includes men’s health and basic information about diabetes, cancer, and nutrition. Additional course topics to support community wellness include: engaging community participants, finding help and support, presentation skills, storytelling as health education, and evaluation. Behavior change topics, such as active listening, goal setting, and the ‘stages of change’ are discussed. As part of this course, participants will apply their knowledge to create their own digital story.

Digital StorytellingEach course participant needs to bring photos and a story idea to the course.

  • Write 200- 250 word personal story focusing upon one important cancer-related health message the participant feels passionate about sharing.
  • Design and develop the story in a format suitable for digital storytelling.
  • Learn computer-based skills for producing their personal digital story.
  • Present their digital story to workshop participants and facilitators.
  • Make a plan to show their digital story to extend cancer knowledge.

Course Participants

Course applicants need to meet the following requirements:

1)Currently working with their community to provide health education and information

2)Able to participate in the entire 5 day course April 28-May 2, 2014(8:30 am until 5:00 pm), which means participants will be focused and present for the entire course

3)Willing to apply their knowledge to create a personal cancer –related health message digital story using computer technology, No previous computer skills needed

4)Able to share their digital story with someone

5)Willing to complete all evaluation materials. This course is being funded by a grant from the National Cancer Institute which requires participants to complete a pre-course needs assessment, end-of-course written evaluation, one month log tracking how you use your digital story, and a post-course telephone interview.

6)Willing to participate in one follow-up teleconference. The Teleconference date(s) will be picked with participants at the end of the 5-day course.

Course Fee

All instruction and supplies will be provided at NO charge. Course participants will receive materials to provide interactive hands-on presentations to promote wellness in their communities.

Participants are responsible for their own lodging, perdiem, and transportation.
