JEAN E. & ROBERT L. PULLIAM SCHOLARSHIP

2018GUIDELINES

Deadline for submission is: March 15th

About Jean and Robert Pulliam

Jean Pulliam was an elementary teacher in the Kingman public schools for nearly 30 years. She taught first grade and had a love for seeing children make out their first words as she taught them to read. She first began teaching kindergarten in Kingman from 1948-1951 after earning a two-year teaching certificate at Wichita State University. She was required to resign in January of 1951, when she was pregnant with her first child, because the school board would not allow a teacher to be pregnant while employed at the school. After her son, Kent and daughter Kathy were born, she returned to Wichita State to earn a four-year degree. She graduated from Wichita State University in 1966 and began teaching first grade later that year. She retired in 1991. Robert “Bob” Pulliam was a lifetime Kingman resident, serving as a mailman until a disability forced his retirement in 1982. He was elected to the Kingman City Council for numerous terms (1976-1991) and served as mayor of Kingman for four terms. He was the chairman for the Kingman Centennial Celebration in 1983. He was Kingman’s representative on the South Central Kansas Economic Development Corp., and served several terms in the Silver-haired legislature among his civic activities.
