Information Sheet for Candidates for Teacher Cadet
The eligibility requirements for entering this course are:
- Must be a senior;
- Has a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the end of the first semester of the junior year and maintain the 3.0 average;
- Has shown exemplary attendance and interpersonal and leadership skills;
- Three teacher recommendations from former or current teachers (high school level only);
- Completion of a brief essay using prompts listed on the Teacher Cadet Application Form;
- Completion of a permission form for classroom observations and field experiences in Potomac Falls cluster elementary and middle schools;
- Your application should be returned to your counselor before it is time for you to schedule for next year. Application packets can be picked up in theGuidance Office. Please return completed application packets to your guidance counselor.
- Check with the teachers who will be providing a recommendation to make sure they have completed and turned in the form to Mrs. Rettle.
- Let your guidance counselor know that you have applied for the Teacher Cadet Program.
Teacher Cadet Program
Core Course Requirements
(1)Students will attend class on a block schedule for thirty-six weeks. Classes will consist of lecture, discovery, discussion, debate, videotaped lessons, role-playing, problem solving, research, decision making, simulations, and observation activities in order to expose and educate Cadets about different methods of teaching.
(2)Students will observe and participate in public school classrooms at the primary, kindergarten, elementary, middle and secondary levels. During these observations, students will collect data on the school environment, the students, the teachers, and student/teacher interactions.
(3)Students will learn about various personnel in the educational system and their responsibilities (e.g., superintendent, principal, curriculum coordinator, school board member, guidance counselor, special education teacher, psychologist, etc.)
(4)Students will discuss both positive and negative aspects of teaching as a career. They will complete and discuss self-assessments in order to obtain clear pictures of their personal interests and abilities.
(5)Students will read current newspaper articles, professional journals, and books that relate to education and teaching. They will also view educational videos and broadcasts.
(6)Students will maintain a portfolio that will include such items as lesson plans, bulletin board ideas, observation reports, learning activities, etc.
(7)Students will complete observations within a variety of classes – core subject (math, science, etc.), art, career and technical education, health and physical education, and music.
(8)Students will be involved in field experiences at a grade level and discipline related to their area(s) of interest.

TEACHER CADET Permission Form
As part of the Teacher Cadet Program, students will be participating in classroom observations and field experiences at local elementary, middle and high schools. Those schools participating are Algonkian Elementary, Horizon Elementary, Potowmack Elementary, Countryside Elementary, and River Bend Middle.
During the first semester, teacher cadets will observe various grade level classes to explore various grade levels and disciplines and to identify a particular grade level and discipline for their field experiences.
These students are expected to arrive on time at their assigned school and Potomac Falls High School.
Permission is granted to in order to make classroom observations and participate in field experiences at his/her assigned schools(s). These activities will be done during the teacher cadet class period.
