Decking Terms

·  Balusters- One of many closely spaced railing supports spaced at regular intervals between posts.

·  Beam- A horizontal support member which rest on the post to support the joists.

·  Composite Decking- Deck boards manufactured from wood fiber or plastic to form a profile which requires less maintenance and generally has a longer lifespan than natural wood.

·  Decking- The material installed over the framing used to make the walking surface.

·  Edge- Either of the two long sides, perpendicular to the face.

·  Footings – The concrete support foundation the deck is built on.

·  Joist- A horizontal structural pressure-treated board that runs from wall-to-beam or beam-to-beam that supports the decking and spreads the weight over the beams.

·  Ledger- The horizontal beam supporting one end of the joists, connecting the deck to the house.

·  Post Footer – A concrete Fill hole, approximately 4 feet below ground that the posts are attached to.

·  Post – A Vertical structural piece that rest on the footing to support a beam or joist.

·  Rails – The top and bottom horizontal members baluster attach to.

·  Riser - The vertical piece between two stair steps attached to the vertical cut surface of a stair stringer.

·  Skirt – a covering for the underneath of a deck.

·  Stringer - The diagonal board in a stair way that supports the treads and risers.

·  Tread – The horizontal surface of the stairs. The “step” or part of the stairs that is stepped on.
