BARA Graduate Research Award
Supported by a generous contribution from A. Richard Diebold, Jr. and the Salus Mundi Foundation, the BARA Graduate Research Award will be given to one or more advanced graduate students specializing in applied anthropology. Its purpose is to support dissertation research and/or write-up. The maximum award level is $4,000 and can be applied toward any research-related expense, including a stipend for the student. In addition, each student recipient will be expected to present the results of his/her research at the annual meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology and will receive funds to cover registration and travel to that meeting.
Graduate students are eligible to receive this award if they:
(1) Have recently completed dissertation fieldwork, have recently completed the comprehensive exam, or have scheduled the exam to take place within three months of the application,
AND
(2) Have demonstrated a commitment to applied anthropology. Demonstrated commitment includes at least one of the following: completed coursework in the applied concentration, included applied anthropology as one topical area on the comprehensive exam, completed a master’s thesis or report in applied anthropology, worked on applied research projects, and/or presented a paper or poster at an applied anthropology conference.
To apply, students are asked to prepare a two-page proposal that includes a statement describing the research focus and its benefits and a statement of personal career goals. The proposal should also include a short budget (half-page) with specific information about how the award will be used (e.g., stipend, travel to a particular place, or per diem at a particular place). To demonstrate eligibility, documentation of a commitment to applied anthropology is required and can include: a statement of completion of the courses in the applied concentration, a copy of the comprehensive exam reading list, the cover page and abstract or summary of the master’s thesis or report, a brief (no more than one page) summary of participation in an applied research project, and/or the program and abstract from an applied anthropology conference.
