Guidelines for the Invert Zoo Lab Project for those unable to attend the Coastal Trip
This project will be turned in as an entry in your final bound notebook. The information that you will use to answer the question will come from:
Ø Previous observations from your notebook
Ø Outside literature sources that support your observations (at least three sources).
Ø additional sampling, identification, and observations made by yourself. One possiblility would be to observe and compare critters at the Georgia Aquarium.
YOU SHOULD FOCUS YOUR OBSERVATIONS ON THE QUALITIES YOU THINK MIGHT DIFFER IN YOUR COMPARISON.
The study must be comparative and relate organismal differences (morphology, behavior, life cycles, etc.) to the environments/habitats in which they live. Develop a question of your own (e.g. a speculation you made in an earlier notebook entry) or choose one comparisons from the following list:
o Coloration
o Open water versus benthic
o Forest floor versus canopy
o Differences among major taxonomic groups
o Terrestrial versus freshwater
o Marine versus freshwater
o Day versus night
o Morphology
o Open water versus benthic
o Forest floor versus canopy
o Terrestrial versus freshwater
o Marine versus freshwater
o Immature and mature forms
o Open water versus benthic
o Forest floor versus canopy
o Terrestrial versus freshwater
o Marine versus freshwater
o Among freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments
o ecological differences
o taxonomic differences
You can restrict your comparison to particular taxonomic groups if wish (e.g. insects). Not only should you provide evidence on whether or not there are such differences, but also discussion why such differences might occur. You can re-draw previous illustrations and/or illustrations from other sources.
