Minutes:
1. VISITATION- Visitation to Rasela Lafaele as a Fatu’ula group on Saturday 6pm
- Venue to be confirmed by Siliva Gaugatao
- Gift of flowers to be taken from Fatu’ula budget (to be confirmed by Siliva Gaugatao) and fruits to be provided by each Fatu’ula member J
2. FINAL WORK FOR 2011
- Units to be completed and uploaded to pacificlanguages.wikispaces.com/fatuula. Please ensure they are placed in the correct folder
- Scholarships discussion/workshop to be conducted on the same day as NZALT language competition after the NZALT language competition
- Baseline conducted by Lala Tuua to be presented on scholarships
- Invitation to be sent out to South Auckland Samoan Language teachers on the week August 15 at AIMHI Centre Otahuhu (Siliva Gaugatao)
- Discussion/workshop will be at 4pm Friday 16 September, Siliva will organise a discussion/workshop for scholarships for Central September 23 and West TBA by Siliva
- Survey will be placed on GOOGLE DOCS by Siliva Gaugatao and will be trialled by Linda Toga and Lala Tuua’s Samoan Language class. Deadline for completion is Friday 19th August
- Feeder school meetings: Each Fatu’ula member to present within their own local feeder schools to be completed before the end of November (reports will be collated for our overall Fatu’ula report
- Observations and feedback: Arranged by Siliva with individual teachers of Fatu’ula
- Fatu’ula teachers to trial at least ONE unit and evaluate how it worked for their class
- E Learning at schools, a little difficult with access that students have; E-Learning workshop to be conducted in a specific Fatu’ula school
- E Learning workshop for Fatu’ula teachers to be conducted at Mangere College (TBC with Mele Ah Sam, Friday 1st September 4pm-6pm
- Teachers to come prepared BEFORE the E-Learning workshop with:
· Wikispace (Samoan Language wikispace)
· At least one class to be entered on to your wikispace (preferably a class who has completed work saved electronically)
· Upload or have access to electronic documents for languages
- Interschool activities:
Wednesday October 5, 9.30am-3pm
Year 10 Samoan Language class (1 hour maximum)
Debate: Siliva Gaugatao, Songs: Lala Tuua, Poems: Henry Fesuluai, Impromptu speech: Linda Toga, Taaloga: Rasela Lafaele, Students’ forum: Mele Ah Sam
*Cluster members to send a list of Year 10 Samoan class students to Siliva Gaugatao and to inform Principal (letter by Siliva Gaugatao)

Mangere College: Sandwiches, apples, Manurewa High School: Sandwiches, bananas, Tangaroa College: Watermelons, Southern Cross Campus: Oranges, salads
**$200 allocated to stationary prizes**
Venue to be confirmed by HENRY FESULUAI outside of school
- Fatu’ula cup criteria: To be offered to Year 7 and 8 students only and according to the theme of the PolyFest. To be recommended to be held on Wednesday at PolyFest (after the Powhiri) – this is to be passed through PolyFest
CRITERIA:
Years 7 & 8
Numbers – Maximum 5 students per group
Length – Maximum 4 minutes
Genre – Comedy
Entry – 1 group per school
Must be an original idea (creativity)
3. SPEECH CONTEST
- 18 entries so far
- Venue: Mt Eden War Memorial Hall (Dominion Road) $300 but discount application was submitted by Siliva Gaugatao and still awaiting response
- Draft marking schedule to be written up by Siliva Gaugatao and sent out to members for feedback
- Lala MC, Henry/timekeeper
- Judges changed to Mele Ah Sam and Linda Toga
- NZALT Competition Programme
9-9.15am – Arrival of schools
9.30-9.40am – Opening prayer, welcoming, sorting of groups
10.00-11.30 – Start of speeches
11.30-12.00 – Morning tea
12.00-12.15 – Presentation/Thanks
**Mini evaluation for Fatu’ula members after the competition to discuss – What we could improve on? What went very well? Etc.
4. KEY MESSAGES IN LEARNING LANGUAGES (NZC)- Achievement objectives are generic across all languages
- A wider variety of text types are offered at every level
- Vocabulary and structures are not prescribed
- Communication is the most important focus, language and cultural knowledge support communication
- Key concepts in Learning Languages: Communication, Identity and Literacy
- Having a feedback sheet for student conferencing

5. SHARING – SUCCESSFUL JUNIOR LANGUAGE PROGRAMME (NZC)
- Do the students understand the vision of our Junior Programme?
- Do the teachers understand the vision of our Junior Programme?
- Discussing with students the value and use of the Samoan language with the student and how it will impact their future, identity, culture and education
- Will it be affective to create schemes together with students? Should students contribute and their voice heard in creating an effective scheme?
- Develop listening, speaking, reading, viewing, presenting etc.
- Having “I CAN” statements; Achievement checklist e.g. Now I can…
- PROGRESS CHART
- Use of portfolios
- Use of Inquiry Cycle from NZC page 35
- Look through Junior Programme and make necessary amendments that fit in with EFFECTIVE LEARNING
- Giving students’ ownership on research topics to seek out opportunities to use language. Trialling by Lala Tuua and Linda Toga
- Using the INQUIRY MODEL to help with differentiation and to get student research, learning and teaching
6. FATU’ULA 2012
- Fatu’ula to continue running for the following year (2012)
- Suggestion to open Fatu’ula to other Samoan Language teachers for 2012 especially for new Samoan Language teachers (De La Salle)
7. GENERAL BUSINESS
- Suggestion for a ‘next step’ for Fatu’ula is to develop some readings for the Samoan language, could be an avenue to get funding into the Fatu’ula account
