WEBB ELLIS CUP COMES TO LEEDS TRINITY UNIVERSITY
Rugby’s greatest prize, the Webb Ellis Cup, will visit Leeds Trinity University on Friday 7 Augustas part of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour.
Launched on 10 June, 100 days to go to the opening match, the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour has travelled through Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales and will continue the journey through England beforearriving at Twickenham Stadium on 18 September ahead of the Opening Ceremony. The Trophy will be visiting further locations in Yorkshire on its way through the region.
To celebrate the Webb Ellis Cup’s visit, Leeds Trinity University will hosta range of activities on Friday 7 Augustfor 70 young people and children who are part of local Rugby teams.
A junior international Rugby tournament will take place during the day, as well as a Rugbytots coaching session for two to seven year olds.
Damon Shaw, Commercial Manager at Leeds Trinity University, commented: “We’re so excited for the arrival of the Webb Ellis Cup on campus. We’ve got a fantastic day of activities planned, giving children from local Rugby teams a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a major icon of Rugby up close.”
Josh Clough, Vice President of Leeds Trinity Students’ Union and former Chairman of Leeds Trinity University’s Rugby Union team, agreed, adding:“The arrival of the Trophy will create a real buzz on campus. I attended the visit of the Trophy to Leeds last year just afterthe University was announced as a Team Base for the USA, which was an amazing experienceand I’m looking forward to youngsters from local Rugby clubs having an opportunity to be part of this visit.”
The Webb Ellis Cup visit also marks Leeds Trinity University’s final countdown to September 2015, when the University will become the official Team Base for the United States of Americasquad during Rugby World Cup 2015. The squad will use the University’s sporting facilities to train and prepare for their match against Scotland held in Leeds during the Tournament.
Damon Shaw added: “We can’t wait to welcomethe USA at the end of September. We’ve invested millions into providing world-class sports facilities on our campus for students and the local community, so it’s fantastic that the quality of these facilities has been recognised by one of the world’s top twenty Rugby teams. The new sports facilities, quality gym equipment – in particular the specialist strength and conditioning lab – will certainly be well-used!”
Josh Cloughalso commented: “The Webb Ellis Cup visit is a great way for us to start the final countdown to the USA squad’s arrival this September. We’re planning more opportunities for students to get involved during the USA’s visit to Leeds Trinity.It’s definitely an exciting time to be a student at Leeds Trinity!”
