OCTOBER / Always spiraling back to review concepts from September, striving for automaticity.
Still working on Rhyming Print Conventions (front/back of book, author, illustrator, words are separated by spaces and words are made up of letters. Read top to bottom and left to right.
Some older children may begin to introduce sound judgment and production.
Identify words that have the same initial sound (not letter)
Start to identify some upper case letters, at this time no sound association.
Play with letters, cookie cutters, puzzles, and awareness of a print rich environment.
Work on positional words for developing following direction skills. (under, over, up, down, beside, around etc.) / Colors and sorting

NOVEMBER / Spiral back and review previously taught skills.
Syllable segmenting. Part to whole and whole to part. Clapping out parts of the word.Hearing parts and putting word together.
Children can begin to try writing the letters of their names in salt trays or with magnet letters. All letters taught with proper pencil grip and formation. Our 3s should not write on lines.
Our 4s; only when ready.
If ready, 4 year olds should start to identify sight words one or two at a time using a multisensory approach. / Concepts of size, more or less
Sorting
1:1 correspondence to 4 or higher.
Counting to 10 or higher and matching to number recognition

December / This is a good time to review all concepts and skills taught up to this point. Informal Assessment in preparation for January Parent/Teacher Conferences. / Review

JANUARY / Continue with letter recognition and matching to lower case letter through manipulation and activities.
Identification of words that end with the same sound.
Our KE students and 4 year olds will begin to hear three letter words sound by sound. This month we can begin segmenting and blending sounds in words. / Sorting by attributes

FEBRUARY / Love of God, family and friends / Continue with segmenting and blending sounds of three letter words.
Begin to teach proper formation of letters and practice on unlined paper, in salt trays, on whiteboards or white blank paper.
Attach a sound to the symbol of a letter and work on consonants only , working first on those with continuum sounds (m,l,r,s,n,f,v,z) as they are easier.
Using the writing of the letter along with its sound will build a multisensory connection.
Emergent writing skills with invented spelling or beginning sounds represented. Spacing between words is modeled. / Concepts more and less
Opposites
Older children counting by ones and tens
MARCH / rReview concepts and continue on with letter sound correspondence. When ready a multisensory approach is used to introduce short vowel sounds one at a time. / Simple graphing activities
Counting and matching amounts and numbers
APRIL / Consonant sounds continue to be taught as well as short vowels, if ready. Consonant sounds x and qu will be last / Review of number concepts
