Opportunity for Success Essay questions
You have one week to prepare all the questions. Two of the questions will be graded for test grades, you select one question to be graded and I will select the other. You must DO all 3 essays but only 2 will be graded.
1. A significant feature of the Electoral College is that most states have a winner take all system. Describe the winner take all feature of the Electoral College. Explain one way which the winner take all feature of the Electoral College affects how Presidential candidates from the major political parties run their campaigns. Explain one way which the winner take all feature hinders 3rd party candidates. Explain two reasons why the Electoral College has not been abolished?
2. The US Constitution was written to protect the minority from the majority, to insure there would be no tyranny of the majority. Describe and discuss two specific safeguards built into the Constitution to protect minority rights. Consider Federalist 10 and 51. In your opinion has the Constitution been effective in guaranteeing minority rights? Please use the Constitution and NOT the Bill of Rights.
3. Are you a Pluralist or Elitist? If you accept either theory to be more true than the other, predict the future of the American Political system. What is the role of the individual citizen? If you reject both theories, what is your view on how the American Political System works?
