Welcome to Hialeah Gardens High School. This year will be challenging and exciting as you embark in a new journey. As your teacher, it is my goal and responsibility to provide you with the best education possible and to be a tool in preparing you for your future. Your responsibility as a student is to put forth maximum effort in order to take full advantage of your learning potential. In order for us both to achieve our objectives, responsible behavior is a must in my classroom. As in every successful environment, there are policies and procedures that you must adhere to in order for us to accomplish our goals.
1. BE RESPECTFUL. Being respectful will definitely get you far, especially in this classroom. Always speak politely. Obscene, vulgar, or humiliating comments spoken or written about others are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Keep your hands and feet to yourself, not touching your classmates or their belongings. Public display of affection is inappropriate in a school setting. Sleeping in class will not be tolerated; you are here to learn and are expected to take advantage of this opportunity. You are in charge of your temper! Bad attitudes or questioning authority will not be tolerated. Keep in mind that there is only one authoritative figure in this classroom.
2. BE PROMPT. You are expected to be in your seats and working when the bell rings. If you are late you must sign the Tardy Roster. Students with 3 unexcused tardies will receive a detention. Three detentions will result in a written referral.
3. BE PREPARED. You are expected to participate in all classroom activities. Bring required materials to each class meeting unless you are otherwise directed.
4. REMAIN SEATED. With 30 students in a classroom, not staying in your seats is both a distraction and a fire hazard. Please remain seated unless you have asked for permission to get up.
5. NO CELL PHONE, IPOD, AND/OR CAMERA USE. All cell phones, cameras, and IPODS must be OFF and completely out of sight. These items will be confiscated and turned in to your assistant principal among other consequences if necessary. If you are asked to turn in a device, it is in your best interest to do so. Refusing to turn in a device will be considered defiance of authority, not only will your device be confiscated, but a written referral will follow. Ms. Gutierrez or other school personnel will not be responsible for stolen items.
6. REFRAIN FROM CHEWING GUM. It is our goal to maintain a new, clean, and pleasant classroom environment throughout the school year. Pick up after yourself and help maintain our classroom clean.
7. FOLLOW SCHOOL DRESS CODE. Hialeah Gardens High School is a uniform mandatory school.
VIOLATIONS OF THE RULES
There will be consequences when failing to follow these policies. The severity of the consequences will depend on the frequency of the behavior and intention of the student. Consequences will include: verbal warnings, parent contact, detentions, written referrals, and parent-teacher conferences, as well as limited privileges in the classroom and/or school activities.
STUDENT-REQUIRED MATERIALS
v Three ring binder (1” to 2”)
v Pen (blue or black ink only)
v Highlighters
v Paper (college ruled)
v One Composition Notebook
v One package of page dividers
Labels will be assigned in class.
v This syllabus should be the first document in your folder at all times
v A valid e-mail address that will remain valid over the course of the school year.
· You should have your binder at all times. You can have a binder check at any time and this is not when you should remove papers from other classes from there. Additionally, if you are tardy or late and there was a notebook check, your notebook may not be graded.
CLASS PROCEDURES
A. Beginning and Ending of class procedures
· Do not stand at the door; walk in to class and look on the board.
· Look on the board to determine the activities of the day and follow its directions.
· If notes are written on the board, chances are, you should write them down!
· If you have homework, it should go in my tray before the bell rings unless otherwise noted.
· Use proper heading. If you forget to properly head your paper, you will loose 3-5 points.
· The bell does not dismiss you, I dismiss you.
B. Substitute Teachers
· You need to understand very clearly, that when there is a substitute present in the room, you will act as if I were present.
· You will not be disrespectful, leave the room filthy, make noise, and worse, allow other people to skip into our classroom.
· I will always treat you with respect and so, I ask the same of you.
· In the event, that someone allows misconduct and the substitute has to report ANY bad news to me, consequences will follow.
· Never submit work to a substitute. Always wait upon my return to submit work in its proper location for it to be graded.
C. Assemblies and Out of Class Exposure
· Assemblies and out of classroom activities are not mandatory and will be based on whether or not I allow you to attend.
· We will walk to the event in a straight line and quietly.
· We will sit together and we will act properly. In the event that we are not acting properly, we will return back to the classroom.
D. Attendance, Admits, Fieldtrips and Athletic Activities
· I will take attendance each day
· When you are absent due to YOUR activities, it is YOUR responsibility to obtain the work.
· Do not come when it is convenient for you to ask for make-up work. Network with your peers. Make use of our blog. Email me or come before/after school.
· When you miss classroom time, you miss classroom instruction, so you might be lost on future assignments. I cannot re-explain everything covered while you were out.
· No admit, no work
