Dr. Henry Chaim Witelson Memorial Prize in Ophthalmology
Application Information
Eligibility:
Medical student enrolled at McMasterUniversity.
Deadline:
Applications must be received November 15, 2010. The successful candidate will be notified by January 31, 2011, and the award will be officially announced on email to all medical students, faculty and staff, and as appropriate in Foundation, Hospital and MedicalSchool newsletters.
Objective:
This prize is intended to provide an opportunity for an in-depth experience in a block elective for a minimum of two to three weeks in a clinical or research aspect of ophthalmology and to increase interest in the specialty of eye medicine and surgery. It is aimed at students in any year who have an interest in ophthalmology as a possible career choice (before CARMS, the Residency matching program held in September of the third year of medical school) or who already have a commitment to ophthalmology (after CARMS).
Application Procedure:
No special form is required for this application. However, the applicant should submit the following to the committee for consideration:
1.A brief description of his/her present educational and professional status in medical school;
2.An up-to-date curriculum vitae;
3.A copy of their Bachelor degree transcript;
4.A description and details of the proposed program for an elective which may include visits to University/Hospital units, a private practice of ophthalmology, or work with a non-profit organization involved in providing eye care to third world countries (list available in Electives Office);
5.A statement of goals of the elective and how the elective may impact on long-term career goals;
6.A budget detailing expenses of the proposed elective; and
7.Two letters of reference concerning the applicant’s educational and professional abilities and experience.
An academic report summarizing the elective will be required within two months after completion of the elective.
Criteria:
Applications will be judged by members of the Dr. Henry C. Witelson Memorial Educational Fund Advisory Committee on the merits of the applicant and the proposed plan of study. The committee may consider the following in making its selection:
1.Academic excellence
2.Applicant’s interest in ophthalmology
3.Clarity of description of proposed elective
4.How important the award would be to help the student pursue ophthalmology
