TITLE: Child Protection Communications Manager
TEAM/PROGRAMME: Child Protection Global Theme / LOCATION: London or any existing Save the Children office, with up to 25% international travel. Local terms and conditions will apply.
GRADE: TBC / CONTRACT LENGTH: 2 years
CHILD SAFEGUARDING:
Level 3: the post holder will have contact with children and young people either frequently or intensively or during Country Programme visits
ROLE PURPOSE:
The Communications Manager is responsible for ensuring that Save the Children makes the best possible use of its capacity to communicate and advocate for its child protection work clearly and effectively across the organisation.
The role holder will be responsible for supporting wider communications and advocacy activities relating to our overall strategy – particularly in respect of delivering on our three strategic Breakthroughs (to ensure no child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday, to ensure all children learn from a quality basic education and to ensure that violence against children is no longer tolerated). And, for ensuring that colleagues in different Save the Children members and in Save the Children International have the material and inspiration to communicate effectively externally.
SCOPE OF ROLE:
Reports to: Head of Advocacy, Child Protection Global Theme, with a strong link to programming and knowledge.

Role Dimensions:
Global Themes are global network leadership bodies working across the Save the Children movement to provide strategic direction and coherence to our global thematic work. They provide and ensure implementation of the framework in which the Save the Children movement aligns its thematic work to further our three Breakthroughs for the most deprived and marginalized children:
a.  No child dies because of preventable causes before their fifth birthday;
b.  All children learn from a quality basic education;
c.  Violence against children is no longer tolerated.
The Communications Manager will work with a wide range of stakeholders, especially within the CP GT core and global teams as well as with Save the Children Members and Save the Children International. This includes the Save the Children International global communications and global advocacy groups. The Communications Manager will also liaise with external contacts within the child protection community.
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Communications Plan (20 %)
·  Develop and implement communications plans ensuring consistency of messaging across a variety of platforms and channels for Save the Children’s global child protection work
·  Contribute to raising the external profile of Save the Children’s child protection work managing a select, strategic number of external communications activities.
·  Work with the Child Protection Global Theme Head of Advocacy to support child protection advocacy work and partnerships to maximise the impact of our interventions in key external advocacy opportunities
·  Contribute to crisis communications where necessary, ensuring that child protection and/or child rights governance messaging is clear, consistent and powerful
·  Measure, analyse and report on the effectiveness of overall communications, adapting the communications plans as appropriate and collaborating with the CP Knowledge & Innovation Advisor to measure, analyse and report on the effectiveness of internal communications
Communications and Advocacy Coordination and Advice (10 %)
·  Coordinate with thematic teams and communications and media focal points in the Global Media Unit, SCI centre, key members, and regional and country offices to ensure that their high-profile communications align with child protection priorities (including Annual Review)
·  Provide expert communications and advocacy advice and coordination support to increase the impact of Save the Children’s child protection policy, advocacy and campaign activities
·  Collaborate with the CP Knowledge & Innovation Advisor to share timely and effective programming and advocacy news and information with key thematic stakeholders, drawing on resources from within and beyond Save the Children
Content Development (40 %)
·  Generate, compile and update engaging and diverse child protection communications and programming and advocacy content (such as success stories, case studies, interviews, blogs, web updates, social media communications) for Save the Children’s websites, intranet and social media accounts.
·  Work with the CP Knowledge & Innovation Advisor and global teams to maintain editorial and brand integrity and alignment of the child protection intranet and materials produced, such as technical briefs.
·  Drive internal engagement with Save the Children’s global thematic plans for child protection by working with the CP Knowledge & Innovation Advisor to support task group co-leads through webinars, talks, Q&A and development of materials if needed
·  Support communication and engagement of child protection programming and advocacy issues through Workplace by Facebook
·  Project manage the production of priority internal and external publications and materials such as key reports and annual reviews. Engage and manage external suppliers and contracted writers, photographers, editors, publishers and printers as required, ensuring they deliver high quality and accurate communications and advocacy products on time and aligned to SC branding guidelines.
·  Play a lead role in the development of programming, communications and advocacy tools and materials for key internal and external child protection related events
·  Support drafting presentations and speaking notes for the child protection global team, steering group and other key stakeholders
Knowledge Platforms: Maintain and support further development of the child protection internal intranet site OneNet and the Child Protection communities on Workplace by Facebook. 20%
·  Interface with the CP GT and across Global Themes to understand knowledge and learning needs and ensure the OneNet platform serves those needs in an efficient and effective fashion
·  Work with the CP GT Knowledge & Innovation Advisor to update OneNet content on a regular basis and on-demand, ensuring consistency with editorial, brand, and design specifications.
·  Work closely with the CP GT Task Groups to facilitate development and utilisation of both OneNet and Workplace sites relevant to their subject matter, and knowledge and learning agendas.
·  Stay abreast of the latest SharePoint and add-on technology.
·  Build strong relationships with member intranet and IT owners to ensure child protection needs are accommodated within the broader organizational platforms.
·  Collaborate with other thematic Knowledge and Communication Managers to measure, analyse and report on the usage and effectiveness of intranet and Workplace experiences and communications, maintain editorial and brand integrity of the child protection intranet and produce regular reports and recommendations for improving the OneNet and Workplace experiences.
·  Represent Global Theme interests in broad organizational dialogue around the sharing of content through an external facing platform(s)
Save the Children’s Wider Communications (10 %)
·  Support and contribute to the development and delivery of Save the Children’s wider communications, programming and advocacy activities, relating to the global strategy and the global campaign. In both areas, it will be important to ensure that child protection activities are contributing to the broader objectives of Save the Children.

QUALIFICATIONS
·  Educated to degree level or qualified by relevant professional experience in communications and/or journalism.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
·  Substantial experience in communications, including relevant international experience in development and/or humanitarian contexts and in complex organisations
·  Familiarity with child protection or a related field preferred
·  Proven experience in the development and implementation of high impact communication plans
·  Excellence as a writer and editor, skilled at distilling large amounts of technical information for diverse audiences
·  Creativity as a communicator, with the ability to develop inspiring and engaging communication products.
·  Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate fluently in English (both oral and written) and the ability to build strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders including at a distance and with flexibility.
·  The ability to work in a second language would be a strong advantage, in particular, Arabic, French or Spanish.
·  Skilled project manager, with an ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities as well as experience of contracting and managing external suppliers.
·  A proven ability to develop and manage digital content.
·  Ability to work and communicate across cultures, as part of a geographically dispersed team and across organizations and stakeholders
·  Adaptable working style and effective when working in situations that may appear ambiguous.
·  Self- motivated and able to work with high degree of autonomy and without close supervision.
·  High level of IT competency, including with a content management systems video and photo editing software, design, printing and production processes, and social media. Experience of SharePoint would be an advantage.
