Key Note Speaker -Dr. Stephen Jefferies – President of SHAPE America
Stephen C. Jefferies, Ph.D, professor, Department of Physical Education, School and Public Health at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, was recently elected President-Elect of the nearly 20,000-member Society of Health and Physical Educators, doing business as SHAPE America. As a national spokesperson for SHAPE America,
Dr. Jefferies will promote quality physical education, physical activity, and health education programs and lend expertise to tackle the growing epidemic of physical inactivity in children and the importance of physical activity for everyone. In 1999, Jefferies was recognized as Central Washington University's Distinguished Professor of Public Service. In addition to teaching, he created and for more than 20 years directed summer PE camps for children in grades K-8. Jefferies is also nationally known as the creator and publisher of the online magazine for physical education professionals, and PE News the monthly emailed newsletter he sends to more than 30,000 subscribers. An established leader, Jefferies has served SHAPE America/AAHPERD in a variety of elected and appointed positions at the state and national levels. He was the President of one of AAHPERD's associations, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), and also served as President of the Washington State AHPERD. In 2011 he received the AAHPERD Honor award and in 2013 NASPE/AAHPERD recognized his contributions to physical education with its Joy of Effort Award. A native of Great Britain, Jefferies received his Physical Education Teaching Certificate from St. Luke's College in Devon, England and his B.Ed. from the University of Exeter. He taught public school physical education before completing his MS and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Oregon.

In order to help proactively address the growing problem of substance use and abuse among our children, the goal is to properly inform and educate our youth to make healthy choices and to give them the opportunity to discuss substance use and abuse with their fellow classmates. The purpose of the peer-to peer substance abuse education program is for students to collaboratively work with one another, educating their younger peers, on how to stay drug-free and empower them with the skills to make health enhancing decisions. More specifically, the program involves training high school students to teach an evidenced-based substance abuse prevention curriculum to middle school students using a peer education model.
A Helmetless Tackling Training Behavioral Intervention in FootballErik Swartz

Youth football participants can experience over 100 impacts in a season, with impacts greater than 80g of linear acceleration having been reported in this population. By the time children begin playing high school football they sustain an average of 600 impacts to the head in a season. This presentation will review the underlying theory and preliminary research findings of a helmetless tackling and blocking training intervention designed to reinforce the behavior of avoiding head-first contact during tackling and blocking in football.

Kickboxing will strengthen students' core, cardio, upper body as well as lower body while learning self-defense movements using written and oral cues to improve performance. Students will display cognitive skills of spatial awareness and develop coordination by using combinations of basic skills, assessing partners in order to refine movement forms as a formative assessment tool, and partners will collaborate in designing combinations of punches and kicks after which they will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their creative process to the class. Students will enjoy this non-traditional fitness program and find it a stress release.

Presentation: The Creator and CEO of a new 3 team sport called TRI will present the history, development and value for school PE. This lecture will include videos a presentation, Q&A, and a discussion with a former NFL player from Connecticut. After 10 years of international development TRI is finally being offered to schools across America. Activity: Participants will get to experience the game and play with patented TRI products. Coaches will teach different aspects of the game including passing, kicking, and shooting and easy to teach drills that could be used in school PE classes. The primary focus of the activity is to relearn/remaster eye hand coordination and explore unique team building and communication tactics.

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is designed to teach international style target archery, the core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement. Before presenting the two-week archery course, teachers will complete a one day NASP Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) workshop. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation implemented NASP in January of 2008 and currently has enrolled and trained 313 schools, including over 38,000 in grades 4-12 during the 2015-2016 school year.

This presentation will entail both a lecture and lab component. For the lecture session, I will discuss best practices and options for formulating a concussion management program; from baseline, assessment, and return to plan considerations. For the lab component, participants will engage in a simulated basic concussion assessment. This is assessment will include symptoms checklist, balance testing, visual acuity, neurocognitive portion, etc. Stony Brook athletic training students will serve as lab assistants.

Circus skills are both basic and complex manipulative motor skills that help students understand the fundamental principles of movement. Circus training requires skill analysis, self-assessment and self-correction to improve previously acquired skills. Circus programs will often involve community building team work which address’s the emotional and social needs of participants. Everybody who participates in circus both teachers and students work together to create a healthy, safe positive learning experience.
