MIND MAPPING

Introduction to Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is a visual form of note taking that offers an overview of a topic allowing students to comprehend, create new ideas and build connections. Through the use of colors, images and words, mind mapping encourages students to begin with a central idea and expand outward to more in-depth sub-topics.

How to Mind Map

Allmind maps begin with a main concept or idea that the rest of the map revolves around, so choosing that idea or topic is the first step. For this assignment your main concept is, “Mesopotamia a difficult environment.”

From that main idea, create branches (as many as needed), that each represent a single word that relates to the main topic. It’s helpful to use different colors and images to differentiate the branches and sub-topics.

Then, create sub-branches that stem from the main branches to further expand on ideas and concepts. These sub-branches will also contain words that elaborate on the topic of the branch it stems from. This helps develop and elaborate on the overall theme of the mind map. Including images and sketches can also be helpful in brainstorming and creating the sub-branch topics.

DIRECTIONS FOR CHAPTER 4 MIND MAP

You will create one large mind map for Chapter 4: The Rise of Sumerian City-States.

“Mesopotamia- A Difficult Environment,” is in the center of your mind map.

• From the center, you should include 4 branches with 4 sub topic circles. These circles should be labeled Food Shortages, Uncontrolled Water Supply, Irrigation System, and Attacks (see example below).

• Use your notes from the four sections Section 4.3, Section 4.4, Section 4.5, and Section 4.6. The notes will go into circles extending from the the 4 sub topic circles you created. A minimum of three additional circles for each subtopic. Remember that your notes should not be long sentences copied from the textbook, but words or phrases that are in your own words.

Include at least one colorful picture for each circle.

• Use the eight key vocabulary terms from Chapter 4 in your mind map. Underline these words when you use them in your mind map

Mesopotamia,

Tigris River,

Euphrates River,

Sumer,

irrigation,

levee,

silt,

city-states

You will be able to use your mind map during the Chapter 4 Assessment.
