QUASIMEME Workshop
Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and
Alkylated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Aberdeen, Scotland10-11December 2009
Co-organisers:Institute for Environmental Studies, VU University,Amsterdam;
Marine Scotland Marine, Aberdeen.
Purpose of the Workshop
The purpose of the workshop on the analysis of polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and alkylated PAHsis to improve the quality of the analysis of these contaminants. The results of the interlaboratory test will be evaluated and new developments in the analysis of PAHs and alkylated PAHs will be discussed.
This workshop will be held at the Marine Scotland, Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. This workshop isorganised by QUASIMEME, in collaboration with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of VU University.
Benefits
The workshop will be beneficial for those working in the field ofanalysis of PAHs and/oralkyl PAH in environmental matrices.
Date and venue
Date: 10December 2009 (9.00-17.00 hrs) and 11December 2009 (9.00 to 13.00 hrs)
Venue: Marine Scotland, Marine laboratory,375 Victoria Road, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Topics and speakers
The workshop will cover all aspects of the analysis of PAHs and alkylated PAHs in environmental samples, mainly in marine mussels and sediment, including:
-Sampling
-Extraction and clean-up
-Instrumental analysis, both LC/UV, GC/MS and GCxGC
-Quantification
-QA/QC (incl. results from the recent PAHs/Alkylated PAHs interlaboratory study)
Key-note speakers
The following key-note speakerswill present their views on the PAH/alkylated PAHanalysis:Dr. Jacek Tronczynski (IFREMER, Nantes, France), Prof.Dr. Wim Cofino,Mr. George McLeod (Bruker Daltonics BV, Wormer, The Netherlands),Mr. Johan Kuipers (Varian, Middelburg, The Netherlands), andMs. Ewa Skoczynska MSc. (IMARES, IJmuiden, The Netherlands).
Your contributions and your questions
There is attainability for contributing lectures and posters. For submission of abstracts, see under registration. If you have specific questions on analytical issues, please send them to the QUASIMEME Project Office prior to the workshop, together with your registration, so that we can include them in the discussion sessions at the Workshop

QUASIMEME and co-organisers
QUASIMEME (Quality Assurance of Information in Marine Environmental Monitoring in Europe) operates a series of Proficiency Testing Studies for institutes making chemical measurements worldwide. As part of the improvement programme, QUASIMEME co-operates with centres of excellence to provide workshops for discussion, and “hands on” experience to complement the development programmes in the Laboratory Performance Studies.
The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the VU Universityin Amsterdamacts as a centre of excellence for QUASIMEME. It contributes to biological test materialtesting for proficiency tests on organic contaminants and trace metals. In addition, scientific advice is given to the annual QUASIMEME programmes through the Scientific Assessment Group. IVM assists in organising workshops on specific analytical topics. IVM combines knowledge on analytical chemistry and toxicology to address a broad range of environmental issues, with a focus on contaminants. More information can be found at
Marine ScotlandMarine Laboratoryis the lead marine management organisation in Scotland. It was established on April 1, 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas. Marine Scotland will combine the functions and resources of the former SG Marine Directorate, Fisheries Research Services and the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency. Marine Scotland's mission is to manage Scotland's seas for prosperity and environmental sustainability - supporting the SG's overall purpose of sustainable economic growth and our vision for our marine and coastal areas.
