The School of Law at NUI Galway (and its specialised research centres: the Irish Centre for Human Rights,the Centre for Diability Law and Policy, the Centre for Housing Law, Rights & Policy and the Marine Law & Ocean Policy Centre) are currently accepting applications for a number of Doctoral Fellowships from prospective full-time or existing full-timedoctoral students. The fellowships provide PhD funding for a maximum of two years.Applications are welcome in any area of law. The School has a thriving community of doctoral researchers, with a particular emphasis on international human rights law and disability law and policy as well as other areas such as housing law and policy and marine law.

These Fellowships are available for the academic year 2013/2014 and will commence immediately upon award.

TwoFellowships consist of an annual stipend of €16,000 and do not cover University tuition fees. They may be extended for an additional 12 months, depending upon funding and satisfactory progress.

One Fellowship consists of an annual stipend of €10,000 and does not cover University tuition fees. It may be extended for an additional 12 months depending upon funding and satisfactory progress.

An additional partial Fellowship, valued at €7,500 per annum, the Michael MacNamara Fellowship sponsored by RDJ Glynn Solicitors, will be awarded to a candidate doing doctoral research with a clear relevance to professional or commercial application.This partial Fellowship, unlike the other three, will be for a period of four years.

The holdersof these Fellowshipswill reside in Galway, Ireland and will engage in research and undertake related teaching and other duties within the School and/or one of the Centres in accordance with University policyin addition to pursuing their own doctoral research. Those interested in applying should submit the following:

  • A covering letter & personal statement
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of reference
  • A statement of the proposed doctoral research (1500 words), outlining the PhD topic’s originality, its intended contribution to the existing literature and methodology

In advance of their application, applicants mustalso have received provisional agreement for supervision froman academic supervisor drawn from the School of Law and its Centres, if not already registered on the doctoral program. Materials must be sent Monday 24th February2014. Applicants may be shortlisted for interview. Successful Fellowship candidates will be required to submit a full application for the full-time structured PhD program to Postgraduate Admission Centre ( with the final award conditional on admission by the University. Please note that these Fellowships are not available for persons undertaking PhD studies at any other University.
