Enjoying the park

Walking

A pleasantwalk starts from the picnic area, follows the creek to the old reservoir, then along the stonewater race to the scenic lookout, taking in manyhistoric and naturalfeatures of thepark.

Unique to thisarea the Aboriginal rock art site sitswithin a granite rock shelter.To theDjabWurrung, this area is a sacredsite. As you visit, you can feel anatural peacefulness aroundyou. Tryto imaginethe spiritual significance that Lar- ne-jeering (LangiGhiran) has,with its mountain peaks overlooking the landscape createdby Bunjilandwhat is nowknownas the Western District of Victoria.

Campingand picnics

There is car-based campingand a small picnic site among CandlebarkGumsat the end of KartukRoad (see map).

Messmate, Manna Gums andRed Stringybark in the mountainsand YarraGums along the

waterways.

Some plants unique to this area are theLangiGhiranGrevillea(Grevilleamontis-colesubsp. brevistyla) andthe GrampiansBitter-pea (Daviesialaevis).

Eastern Grey Kangaroos,wallabies, echidnas and a varietyof birds can be found throughout the park.

Morerecent history

Major Thomas Mitchell climbed Mt LangiGhiran on his 1836expedition through ‘Australian Felix’. The two reservoirs in the parkwere built from locally hewngranite blocks in1880. The main reservoir stillforms part of the Araratwater supply and is worth a visit.
