Daily: 3-ring binder with notepaper or notebook and folder, graph paper, and a single divider, a calculator, a covered textbook (no book socks), pencils, and an attitude that is ready to learn
*a graphing calculator is suggested, but not required*
At home and occasionally in-class: plastic folder to keep each unit organized, compass, and protractor
Course Description: This course is designed to be challenging throughout but very rewarding in the end. Throughout the year, students will learn how to solve equations, graph equations, solve systems of equations, work with polynomials, solve multi-step word problems, and understand radicals and rational expressions. Moreover, the students will learn the value of hard work, take responsibility for their own learning, become critical and independent thinkers, and learn to work individually and in groups. The students will all experience algebra for themselves through group work and technology integration. The students are expected to be responsible for their own learning and will develop skills throughout the year to communicate mathematically to one another.
Homework: Homework will be assigned and checked daily. Homework is a helpful tool for student understanding so therefore completion is encouraged. Organization, neatness, following directions, completion, and having work shown are all aspects of homework. Each assignment will be worth five points and points are granted as follows:

No unexcused late assignments will be accepted, though completion of the assignment is encouraged. You have one day for every day you miss to make up any missed work.
Tests and Quizzes: Quizzes will occur weekly and are designed to check to make sure the basic concepts of the material is understood. Quizzes will be announced or unannounced and once returned students are responsible for placing them in their binder. Tests will occur at the end of every chapter and will be more in depth then quizzes.
Participation: Students are expected to speak in class by asking and answering questions and by being active members of their small groups when working collaboratively. Students will be required to do warm-ups daily and keep them in their notebooks. Student participation also involves being prepared for class and being focused throughout the period.
Binder: Maintaining an organized binder is important for success in the class. Only one unit is kept in a student’s binder at a time. Each student’s binder will be separated into two parts: class work and quizzes. Every day the students will start on a fresh sheet of notepaper with the warm-up, followed by notes/class work, and homework will be recorded after each day’s notes. Once a unit is completed students are encouraged to take the notes and quizzes from their binder and put in the plastic binder at home for final exam study reference.
Responsibility: In 8th grade, students are expected to be more responsible for missed work due to absences. If a student misses one day homework is recorded for a week on the board, if a test or quiz was missed the student is required to take the assessment the day they return, and notes can be retrieved from a friend of the teacher. Furthermore, if a student feels as through they are struggling with the material, an initiative should be made to meet with Miss Schauble to schedule time for extra help. Students are expected to arrive on time to class and always treat everyone with respect.
Curriculum: The Algebra curriculum comes with a prerequisite that the students have gained a high mastery of concepts presented in 7th grade pre-algebra.
