Stewarts/Race Marshals Briefing Notes
1 All race marshals should carry this briefing note with them during the race. Please also take mobile phones – and if applicable, a radio-control device.
2 You could be in standing in place for a couple of hours so make sure that you take suitable clothing to protect against sun, rain or cold weather.
3 Please ensure that you are in a position to actively direct the runners onto the correct route. If you are positioned by a cattle grid, you must open the adjacent gate and direct runners through, avoiding the grid.
4 All stewards/race marshals will wear marshals yellow bib to allow easy identification
5 All marshals will be briefed on their role during and after (if applicable) the event.
6 In the event of an emergency, emergency services/essential traffic may need access to the course. All such traffic takes priority/precedence over runners. This may mean halting or slowing runners. This will not be a simple task and therefore, will only be attempted in extreme circumstances.
7 Remember spectator and competitor safety is your responsibility.
8 It is vital to the smooth running of the event to keep the course clear. Spectators and other visitors should be politely asked to keep the course clear to allow runners to pass and only allowed to cross the course when there are gaps in the runners. You may need to ask cars to wait if runners are on the course
9 Ensure that you know the location of toilets and medical facilities at the start and finish areas.
10 Be on the look out for any problems. Report any problems to the Race Director.
11 Be calm and polite – conduct your duties in a calm and orderly manner.
12 Particular care should be taken when dealing with children. When dealing with lost children please ensure that they are put into the care of at least two members of Alnwick Harriers. If the child is not collected the police will be informed.
13 Whilst the front-runners may be fast and fit some of the later runners will need some encouragement to push them onto the finish. A word from you may be just what they need.
14 Remain in position until the last competitor has passed and a back marker notifies you of completion. At the briefing, it will be discussed how you will return – for example – to be collected, or if you need to make your own way back to start.
15 You must inform the Race Director, Mark Doctor, of any unexpected events or circumstances. Future Les Allcorn races depend on the smooth running of this one.
