Every new IT system installation had a beginning. This is where the IT Project Manager does his job. Like constructing a building, project management disciplines work to ensure that a system installation consisting of computer and network hardware along with systems software and applications create a synergistic wholeness that allow the business to benefit from its promised advantages. Often comprised of a team from the user department(s), representatives from the organization’s IT department, computer and network vendor, OS software and database vendor and the application vendor, the IT Project Manager brings all the necessary resources together to commission the new system in the shortest time and with the least cost for the organization.

Project Manager Duties and Responsibilities

· Plan, initiate, and manage information technology (IT) projects work breakdown structure (WBS) of information technology projects.

· Implement PERT/CPM disciplines to effectively monitor costs, resource deployment and timelines for the required activities

· Manage the projects with strict adherence to scope, timelines, resources and budgets

· Assign the duties and responsibilities of each team member and their expected deliverables at each landmark point

· Provide contingency measures to minimize risks to the project success

· Prepare and report on project progress on a regular basis

· Should possess high analytical abilities with an eye for details without missing the total picture

· Should possess excellent organizational and managerial abilities to handle resources assigned to the project

· Should possess excellent interpersonal and leadership shills to mobilize a team of professionals

· Should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills

Project Manager Education and Qualifications

· A Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technologies or related course in computers and management sciences is essential

· A 2-3 year experience as a project manager in IT or construction is an advantage

The average annual salary of an IT Project Manager is $80,000 per annum.
