Name:Snowball Races
Overview:
- relay starting behind the skipping rope then moving as quickly as possible to the pylon, around it and back across the starting line while holding a spoon with an egg.
- 4 pylons
-metal spoons in a bag
-plastic eggs in a bag
Rules:
-each tribe divides into 4 mini tribes
-each tribe stands behind a pylon
-the first person stands behind the starting pylon with the plastic egg on the spoon
-the leader says, “Ready, Set, Start” and the first person moves as quickly as possible towards the pylon of the other group while keeping the egg balanced on the spoon without holding it
-if the egg drops, stop, pick it up, place it on the spoon again and continue
-the first person passes the starting line, he/she passes the spoon with the egg to the second person
-the second person then repeats what the first person did
-this relay continues until all members of the tribe have had a turn
-the mini tribes shows they are finished by squatting/kneeling on the ground (the ground will likely be too dirty or wet to sit)
Notes to volunteers:
-Ask the mini tribes to stand 2 metres behind the starting line to allow space for the exchange of the spoon with the egg.
-Challenge: Try the same relay with 2 people holding the same spoon and moving to the opposite pylon.

Name:Icicle Toss
Overview:
-4 mini Pylons (2 per mini tribe)
-4 large pylons (2 per mini tribe)
-rubber rings(2 per mini tribe + extras)
-place mini pylons 10 feet away from the large pylons
Rules:
-divide the tribe into 2 mini tribes
-have the tribes line up behind the mini pylon in line with the first large pylon
-have the students try and throw one ring onto the first large pylon
-they then move to mini pylon in front of the second large pylon and try to throw the ring onto it
-they then return to the back of the line of their mini tribe and await their next turn
Notes to volunteers:
-make sure the students are rotating through the two lines of their mini tribe only
-if need more of a challenge push the strat line further back or have two students throw at the same time

Name:Mural painting
Overview: -Students will draw winter activities, objects, themselves with friends at Carnaval, trace hands write their names in bubble
-Letters on the large mural that is provided
-Coloring tools will be provided in bins for the students to use
-Poster paper will be taped up in the designated area for students to use
-Have students space out to draw.
-roll of poster paper
-masking tape
-scissors
-crayon/marker bins
Rules :-Have students sit along te opposite wall of the poster to explain the activity
-Explain the activity-Say: - You can colour Carnaval related activities on the poster, winter activities, objects, themselves with friends at
Carnaval, trace hands write their names in bubble letters on the large
- Please color neatly and not too big as the station is only for a short amount of time.
-Please be sure to return your crayons/markers to the bin after using the color
- Tell the students they should not colour over other people’s work and should space out along the paper
-Have remove or unzip their jacket and mittens/gloves once they have listened. They should put these things on the opposite side of the mural. NO removal of snow pants or boots. Try to keep as much clothing on the younger ones as it takes them a long time to get ready.
-Be sure to supervise that no one is getting squished and everyone is respecting eachother’s artwork. Provide positive comments and ideas on the artwork competed (Great Job! I like your….! Wow, what a neat…….)
-Have the students clean up two minutes before the activity change as they will need time to redress themselves for the next station
-Have them sit on the opposite wall of the mural so they are ready and not wetting the mural
Notes to volunteers:
-Stay organized and be sure go explain the rules quickly and with enthusiasm.
-Keep the station tidy
-Change the mural paper if it is too full and be sure to supervise at the coloring is going on
-Watch the time
-Neatly roll up the mural paper that you take down
-Have fun!

Station:D & Q
Name:Snowball Chuck
Overview:
-set up 1 practice target
-bonhomme head target
-hula hoop (for practice)
-Students will be tossing (NOT WHIPPING) “snowballs” (bean bags) at the target
-Divide group into two lines, that have to line up behind the cone
-The cones should be about 5 meters away from the target.
-The cones should be about 3 meters away from each other
-Two bins with 8 beanbags in each
-Two pylons
Rules:
-Toss the “snowball” underhand should be encouraged
-Students to get two snow balls to throw at the target then go to the back of the other line to try and hit the other target. They continue to alternate at the back of the line of each target until the station time is over.
-It is your job to quickly get the bean bags tossed back to the tossing line so the students are never waiting for a bean bag-we want to make sure everyone has a chance at each. You can also ask for a volunteer to do this at each target if someone wants
-Make sure the students stay in a line
-Have the students cheer for the student while waiting (Hoorah!, Bravo!, lance la boule de neige)
Notes to volunteers:
-if want to make more difficult can ask the students to do a specific throw (i.e. through the legs, backwards, etc)
- Have fun!
-Stay organized explain the rules quickly and with enthusiasm.

Name:Curling
Overview:
-there will be 2 lanes of curling
-the rocks (those objects that are thrown in curling) are made of freezing water in a take out containers with a metal wire handle
-there is a different colour pipe cleaner around the handle of each set of rocks
-there will be a target on the ground underneath the curling tarp
Rules:
-divide Tribe into 4 teams
-place 2 teams at the end of each sheet in 2 separate lines
-assign a colour to each team
-the kids take turns sliding the rocks down the sheet and see how close they can get them to the button (the big circle)
-the kids MUST have 1 knee on the ground at all times to avoid lobbing the rock (they could break)
-they can try to knock the opponent’s rock out of the target, closest to the button gets a point for their team
-keep playing back and forth
Notes to volunteers:
-say “GO” each time you are ready for the kids to slide the rocks and make sure that they are on one knee prior to prevent throwing
- there will be extra rocks in the staff room so ask a teacher to get them if needed

Name:Team Skiing
Overview:
-3 sets of skis
-Divide team into 3 teams
-Make teams with 3 younger and 3 older students
-Have finish line marked with pylons
Rules:
-teams place feet in the straps (3 smaller and 3 larger ones)
-place hands on shoulders of person in front of them
-When say “GO” together as a team must walk with the skis to the finish line
Notes to volunteers:
-may need help getting into the skis
-if taking too long, shorten the distance
-if extra time, have them try walking backwards
-make sure they go slowly so as to not fall

Name:Hockey Shoot-out
Overview:
- Nets set up side by side – 6 feet apart.
- Players on each team take alternating ‘penalty shots’ against the net.
- Pass the stick along the line to the next player after each shot.
- Pucks (or balls) will be retrieved by the ‘referees’ (grade 7 or 8 activity leaders) and returned to the next player in line OR; if we have enough pucks (or balls) the pucks can be retrieved after each shoot-out (so the activity does not need to be interrupted to chase balls/pucks…keeps things moving.
- Wait for whistle before next 2 players take shot (safety)
Materials:
- 2 sticks per circuit
- balls or pucks (one per player if possible – 3 per team if not enough)
- 2 nets
- tape or chalk (shoot-out start lines and team line-up)
- coin (for tie breaker round)**
Rules:- Two teams line up side by side in front of their net, with the first player for each team on the shoot-out start lines* and the rest of the team lined up on team line-up line (4 feet behind and 4 feet to outside).
*shoot-out start lines: grades 1 – 4: 10 feet away from net … grades 5 & 6: 15 feet away from net
- Player will be disqualified if they take a shot before the whistle (make this clear before the start)
When the whistle is blown, the 2 players on the shoot-out line take their shot and then pass the stick to the next player behind them in line. ONLY ONE SHOT PER PLAYER – No ‘subs’.
Puck (or ball) in the net = 1 point (GOAL!!)
No slap shots! Player will be disqualified and goal discounted if stick is raised higher than shoulders.
Winning team will be the team with the highest score when all have gone 1x. Uneven teams: 1st player on short team goes again against last player on team with extra player.
If teams tie the winner will be determined by a ‘SUDDEN DEATH’ shoot-out. **Coin toss = who goes first. First goal scored = winner.
Notes to volunteers:
Watch for high-sticking/slap shots (disqualify), do not allow ‘subbing’ of players (a player who is an all-star hockey player may not take another players turn for them), Please ensure that team line-up stays on their line, well back and to the side of the ‘shooter’, for safety. No one runs past the start line or team line and no shots before the whistle (disqualify). HAVE FUN!!

Name:Obstacle Course (Course de Canots)
Overview:
-divide Tribe into 2 teams
-teams will have 10 minutes at station
-2 obstacle courses
-chairs, cones, skipping ropes, hula hoops per station
-start and finish line
Rules:
-volunteers walk Duke and Duchess through obstacle course to show all steps
-each team member must complete course, through cone at the end, then run back to start line touching next team member’s hand
-next team member goes, team to complete first wins
Course:
1)run to chair, sit down, run around once completely
2)run to hoop, lift over head and step through
3)run to skipping rope on ground, jump forward and backwards over the skipping rope, both feet together without touching rope (start again if the rope is touched)
4)touch end cone and run straight back to start
Notes to volunteers:
-add or delete requirements (do 5 jumping jacks, spin 2 times, skipp 3 times) to adjust difficulty

Name:Dog-Sled Races
Overview:
-divide Tribe into 2 teams
-teams will have 10 minutes at station
-2 red crazy carpets sleds with yellow rope attached
-set up starting and finish line 25 feet apart or set up pylons
-skipping rope (or nylon rope) tied to bin
Rules:
-each team organizes their team into groups of 4, 3 larger students and 1 smaller group member
-smallest member sits on the crazy carpet and holds onto the handle, the other 3grab the rope to pull – have 1 at the front and 2 at the sides
-on “GO”, teams pull 1st team member to the finish line and back to the start line
-next 4 members pull and ride until all team members have finished
-fastest team wins
Notes to volunteers:
-if time is left, run another relay
-if it is too difficult to pull crazy carpet, pull one way and run back with the crazy carpet to the start line
-remind the students to walk quickly not to run so as to not tip the carpet over or so that the child on it doesn’t fall off

Name:Tug-o-War
Overview:
-divide team in to 2
-have rope lying on ground
-have pylons to mark neutral zone
Rules:
-have students line up beside the rope, alternating sides
-if not wearing gloves make sure they put on a pair provided
-on “GO” they need to pull with their team to bring the sash past their pylon
Notes to volunteers:
-make sure you tell the students they are not to let go of the rope quickly
-once a team has won, ask both teams to stop pulling slowly
-make repeat contest

Name:Bowling
Overview:
-divide team in to 2
-set up the pins in triangles of 5s
-line teams up about 15 feet away from the pins
- whiffle balls for older students and larger ones for younger
Rules:
-have students take turns ROLLING the ball down the hallway towards the pins
- if they bounce the ball they miss a turn
-they get points depending on how many pins they know down
-they get 2 rolls per turn
-grade 1-3 use the rubber utility or elephant balls; grade 4-7 use the whiffle balls
Notes to volunteers:
-make sure you are quick at getting the ball back to the bowler and the pins back up
-if they need more of a challenge give them a specific way to roll the ball, i.e. under one leg or backwards
-they get 5 points if they know them all down, and 1 point for every pin knocked down. i.e. if they knock down 3 pins they get 3 points

Name: Pillow Fight (La Pitoune)
Overview:
-divide Tribe into 4 teams
-teams will have 10 minutes at this station
-4 pillows, 1 for each team
-4 hula hoops, 1 for each team
-2 competitions happening at the same time
- stop watch
Rules:
-each team organizes themselves in order smallest to tallest
-first players take position inside their hula hoop
-on “GO” team member tries to knock opponent out of hula hoop by hitting them below the shoulders and above the knees
-if player is bumped and steps out of their hula hoop that player is out
-next pair goes
-time competition for 30 seconds, if nobody has been knocked out of hoop after 30 seconds, call a tie
-team with most “knock outs” wins
Notes to volunteers:
-ensure opposing team members are of similar size and height
-disqualify members who hit head – automatic loss

Overview:
-1 team will rotate through this station
-2 table areas are set up to serve hot chocolate and maple cookie
-hot chocolate will be provided in warming urns
-paper cups can be set up in muffin tins to help keep them upright
