Mission Statement for Chillicothe Education Foundation
The Chillicothe Education Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation. Our mission is to provide financial support for scholarships and enriched educational programs for the staff and students of Chillicothe City Schools.
Vision Statement for Chillicothe Education Foundation
Our vision is to prepare and challenge our students for the 21st Century by the year 2001. We will provide projects that include scholarships, chairs of excellence, classroom projects preschool-12, and capital improvements. We will accomplish our vision by establishing an endowment of $500,000 through various financial streams.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF
CHILLICOTHE EDUCATION FOUNDATION
THROUGH DECEMBER 2000:
- 1987 Chillicothe Education Foundation created by friends of Chillicothe City Schools in cooperation with the Chillicothe Board of Education. Purpose: “to provide financial support for scholarships and enriched educational programs for staff and students of Chillicothe City Schools.”
- 1995 Chillicothe Education Foundation endows $15,000 scholarship to Ohio University-Chillicothe; awards four $1000 grants to CHS graduates each year
- Computerized the CHS guidance office. Each of the four counselors has available in his/her office computerized career/college search.
- Provided more than $30,000 to the improvement of facilities (not equipment) at Mt. Logan Middle School’s McVicker Field.
- Contributed to the Scioto Valley Arts Council to bring a Shakespearean play into Chillicothe City Schools.
- Contributed funds in association with the Alumni Association for the CHS Band shell
- Provided funds for a poet’s visit to Central Elementary School
- 2000 - establishes Cavalier Endowment Scholarship Fund to enable future CHS graduates to pursue posts secondary education and to support faculty of Chillicothe City Schools who want to continue their scholarly pursuits.

CAVALIER ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
In the year 2000 the Chillicothe Education Foundation established the Cavalier Endowment Scholarship Fund. This fund enables future CHS graduates to pursue postsecondary education and to support faculty of Chillicothe City Schools who want to continue their scholarly pursuits.
A question to be asked is “How strong is the current that runs between a child and a community?” As alumni, we were enlightened by our years at Chillicothe High School. Special teachers who took the time to ignite our love of learning inspired us. In gratitude, we can brighten the lamp of learning and help CHS graduates & Chillicothe City Schools faculty achieve their scholarly dreams.
For many CHS students and faculty, financial restrictions curtail these dreams. The Chillicothe community and alumni of Chillicothe High School can provide a greater source of illumination that will linger in a graduate long after the initial flame is ignited. We want to encourage students to look beyond their high school years and faculty to continue their pursuit of learning. The Cavalier Endowment will provide substantial scholarships to CHS graduates and faculty.
Gifts and bequests will be managed and invested by Board of Trustees and Cavalier Endowment Treasurer as specified by the CEF. When assets reach $500,000 interest monies will begin funding scholarships. Contributions to the Scholarship Fund may be made in single payment, yearly pledge, and through wills, trusts and insurance policies. Some individuals may qualify for tax advantages since CEF is a 501(c) (3) corporation to which gifts are tax deductible. The CEF will be happy to provide additional tax information. Donors should also discuss their plans with their personal legal and financial consultants.

If CHS students know they can receive substantial scholarships from their community, they are likely to be motivated to excel in academics.
Financial support by alumni will help Chillicothe City School faculty realize their hopes and dreams for continuing scholarly pursuits.
Support for academic achievement can radiate through the entire Chillicothe community, increasing respect for citizenry.
A well-educated community provides a strong economic base on which future generations will build.
When people hear the name Chillicothe High School, we want them o think of scholarship.

Mission Statement for CHS Alumni Association
Our mission is to encourage and sustain a spirit of fellowship among alumni and friends of Chillicothe High School. We will accomplish this by providing activities, communication and involvement.
Vision Statement for CHS Alumni Association
We will increase and support involvement of alumni. This will include:
- Career sharing experiences with students in conjunction with school staff.
- Establish and develop satellite alumni chapters.
- Increase the number of active paid members.

CHILLICOTHE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
THROUGH DECEMBER 2000:
- 1988 Chillicothe Education Foundation organized CHS Alumni Association as a standing committee of CEF.
- Successfully competed three All Class Reunions 1991, 1996, 2000
- Started planning the fourth All Class Reunion for July 4, 2003 along with Ross County Schools.
- Published twenty one editions of Mid the Hills, the alumni newsletter
- Inducted twenty one members as Distinguished Alumni at All Class Reunion
- Sponsored an alumni homecoming dance in 1988 and 1997, and planning one for Sept 2001
- Sponsored four luncheons to provide teachers and the business community an opportunity to meet and exchange information
- Purchased equipment carts for the CHS Band
- 1991 Adopted the CHS Library/Information Center as its Number One project and raised more than $1 million to complete, dedicated Sept 1997
- TV Media center at CHS Alumni Library helped purchase equipment
- 1999 Launched Terrace project to build community gathering place. Brick sales support curriculum projects at CHS.

TERRACE PROJECT
In the tradition, which created Chillicothe High School’s Alumni Library, Chillicothe Alumni Association invites you to join in its newest endeavor to enhance the educational experience of our community.
The Association’s vision, which created the library in 1997, has extended to include the creation of an endowment for the purpose of funding a unique enrichment program. The Chillicothe Alumni Enrichment Endowment would award grants of $10,000 or more to two-curriculum area each year. Each area would in turn host special speakers and notable alumnus, offer master classes and workshops, and fund other unique educational experiences beyond which the Board of Education is able to fund. The public would be invited to participate in these lectures, concerts, and programs, in the hope that both past and present students would be intellectually motivated and inspired well into the future.
In order to accomplish this goal financially, the Association is planning the Alumni Terrace. The terrace will occupy the north side of the Alumni Library. The 2,100 square-foot garden will be comprised of a mixture of green space and permanent landscape effects such as bricks, pavers, benches and stone walls with seating ledges. Arrangements of plants such as hostas, daylilies, black-eyed susan, boxwood shrubs, and ornamental trees will be incorporated with currently existing trees and shrubbery. Walkways will connect the library to the terrace, opening into three interlinked circles created by bricks and pavers. Walkways will lead away from the circles to walkways surrounding the rest of the school. The terrace will serve as an open air meeting space and alternative classroom, accommodating as many as 100 people at a time. The Alumni Terrace will be available year round to host alumni groups and civic organiziations.
There are different ways that you can participate by donating to the Terrace fund. For a contribution of $75 your name and class date will be engraved on a 4 ½” by 8” brick; for $250 donation engraving on a paver 8” by 8”; and for $1800 you, your class, your family or your business can select a bench engraved or a tree with a tag engraved bearing your inscription. For those who wish to contribute in a different way, donations can be made to the Scioto Fund in any amount. Your donations are a tax-deductible.
By making a donation, you are ensuring quality educational programs for Chillicothe High School students for years to come. Be sure your class and your place in Chillicothe High School’s history are preserved in the Alumni Terrace. Your continued support of the Alumni Association’s work is deeply appreciated. Call the Alumni Office to have a form sent to you.
Together, we built an outstanding state of the art Alumni Library. Now, let us come together to build a garden of knowledge for Chillicothe High School and our city.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI HALL OF FAME
At the first All Class Reunion in 1991 a decision was made to establish a Hall of Fame for Distinguished Alumni. The appointees were selected on their contributions to society, recognition of the nominee in their field of endeavor, and overall accomplishments after graduation from Chillicothe High School. Their pictures will hang on a background of deep blue outside the Alumni Library, reminding us that they were Cavaliers first.

PAST TO THE PRESENT
150 YEARS OF EDUCATION

On October 4, 1850 FREE public education under the current system commenced for the common schools of Chillicothe following the 1849 School Law enacted by the state legislature. Chillicothe was divided into school districts with the logical names of Eastern, Western, and Central. Currently the city schools has 5 elementary schools, Allen, Hopewell, Tiffin, McArthur, Central and Worthington; two junior highs, Mt. Logan and J.A. Smith; and one high school – on Yoctangee Blvd. In 1889 a state law was enacted requiring school attendance until the age of 16. In 1921 this was changed to require school attendance until age 18. It was not until 1859 that the high school graduated its first class. There were three graduates: Maria McKell, Margaret McKell, and Olivia Allston.
1.1853 – Central High School was first high school
2. 1870 – 1952 – Eastern School (note the circular fire escape) was located on the north side of Main St. between Sugar and Mosher St at the railroad tracks. Because of the dangerous location, a new Eastern was built on Bridge St. between Main and Second St.
3. 1870 -Western School building erected at the southeast corner of Cherry and Chestnut St. rebuilt in 1912, today it is used by the Board of Education and as an early childhood education preschool.
4. 1870 – Southern School building erected at the corner of Walnut and Seventh St. for the education of African-American students. It remained in use until 1956.
5.1901 to 1934– West fifth Street School building served as the high school, used as a junior high school from 1932-1970, and razed in 1973.
6.1934 – 1963 – Arch and Vine Streets was the next location for the High School. It is now known as J. A. Smith Middle School.
7. 1927 - Mt. Logan School Junior High School, located on E. Main St. razed and replaced in 1975
8. 1963 to present – Yoctangee Parkway became the home of the “new” Chillicothe High School
