Option 1: Do Power Lines Cause Cancer?
1) Review the history of this subject, with special attention to:
a) the first study claiming link between 60 Hz electric power lines and childhood leukemia, and the possible limitations of this study
b) popularization of this and other studies in the media
c) extensions of alleged culprits to include microwaves, radar, computer monitors and most recently cell phones
2) Provide a clear description of the purported scientific mechanisms behind the deleterious biological effects of electromagnetism. John Farley's article provides a comprehensive list of references:

What do respected physicists R. K. Adair (Ref. [12]) and J. D. Jackson (Ref. [16]) have to say?
3) List the nationally sponsored panels charged with scientific review of these allegations and summarize their reports.
4) List ongoing efforts in the evaluation of this public health issue. Finally, provide your own view on this subject, supported by the literature.
This paper should be at least 4 full pages or more, double spaced. Please do it as a Google Doc and share it with me, so I can review previous versions. Cut and pasting is NOT allowed. It all must be in your own words and properly APA cited. (The citation page is not included in the 4 full pages.)
Option 2: Find physics in movies.
Collect movie clips that demonstrate principles of physics covered in this class; these clips must come from popular Hollywood movies. You will need to find 5 movie clips. Please link the Youtube movie clips to your paper. In addition, you will need to write a one-page paper (for each clip) describing the physics of the clip or why the physics they are showing are false (why the physics DOESN’T work); your final submission will include this 5-full-page paper plus the clips. Please do it as a Google Doc and share it with me, so I can review previous versions. Cut and pasting is NOT allowed. It all must be in your own words and properly APA cited. (The citation page is not included in the 5 full pages.)
(AND, since I am offering this extra credit option to both physics classes, it should not need to be said, BUT….if anyone has the same exact movie clips as another person, I will assume you worked together and no one will get the extra credit.
THESE PROJECTS ARE DUE BY MONDAY 5/18 at 3:30. No late extra credit projects will be accepted. Period. If you are absent, I still must receive it (it must be shared with me) by 3:30 on 5/18. You may receive no more than 20 points on this extra credit option, AND you cannot achieve more than 100% in the class for the quarter.
