A652 Spoken Language Study (controlled assessment)
Year 10 (V Form) Autumn Term (2)
The lead text used for the controlled assessment will be the episode of News Round from 2010:

However, these will be compared to an episode from 1982:

The controlled assessment task is to be set by the centre. The proposed task is therefore as follows:
Focusing mainly on ‘News Round’, explore the methods that producers and presenters of TV news programmes use to communicate to their audiences
Video: the clips used in this scheme, as well as additional footage, are saved as avi files in the Department folder. Alternatively, they can be found here:
Week 1:
· Intro to controlled assessment: task, assessment objectives, skills, procedure and product.
· AO2:
o Understand the range and uses of spoken language, commenting on meaning and impact and draw on this when talking to others.
o understand variations in spoken language, explaining why language changes in relation to contexts
§ Over time
Adapting to new technologies
§ Different social contexts: different groups, different situations, different purposes.
o Evaluate the impact of spoken language in their own and others’ use
§ How we structure our speech,
§ Our choices of tone, register, pace
§ How we support spoken language with non-verbal communication
· Distribute work booklets
· Mind map conventions of TV news.
· Watch clip of BBC news from London Riots and answer questions.
· First viewing of 2010 News Round clip and rudimentary analysis.

Week 2:
· Structure of news programmes. How are the stories chosen?
· Give list of fictitious events and ask girls to put together a news show for a five minute slot. What will be left out etc? See attached instruction sheet. Assess as group discussion S&L (Real Life Context)
· Analysing the structure and language of Newsround 2010: structure; register / mode of address, language; prosody and non-verbals
· Analysing News Round 1982 transcript and completing table

Week 3
· Terminology test, using quotes from the two transcripts.
· Complete analysis of News Round 1982
· Comparison of the two news shows:
o What is similar about the structure and language? Register?
o What differences are there?
o Prosodic differences?
· How are contextual factors important in understanding the language variations?
· Discuss how to create a comparative analysis, revisiting Assessment Objectives
