Candidate’s Statement:
I have been associated with the University of Cape Town for most of my adult life, commencing as a student in 1953, playing rugby for under 19A in 1954 and 1st 15 in 1955, and completing my postgraduate studies in 1964. I was a UCT staff member from 1967 to 2000. Latterly, in retirement, I was a Convocation elected member of UCT Council (2004 to date). It is my sincere wish to continue to serve the University for a third term as a Member of Council.
I have had a lifelong interest in tertiary education and in academic medicine. I have been actively engaged in both International and South African Societies in the research and medical fields, and have held Honorary Professorships in Surgery in the USA, UK and France. I have been actively involved in University committees throughout.
I believe that this background, as well as my experience as an active member of Council over the past eight years, including chairing the “Honorary Degrees Committee” more recently, will enable me to continue to serve UCT meaningfully, if re-elected to Council for the next four year term.
