About MAESTRO
Methods and Advanced Equipment for Simulation and Treatment in Radio Oncology
The integrated project MAESTRO under contract with the European Commission in Life sciences FP6 n° LSH 503564, proposes innovative research to develop and validate in clinical conditions the advanced methods and equipment needed in cancer treatment for new modalities in highly conformal external radiotherapy employing electron, photon and proton beams.
The MAESTRO project aims to improve the conformation of dose delivered to the target (tumour and nearby tissues) whatever its shape, in order to spare the surrounding tissues. New technologies in the field of patient positioning and organ tracking, advanced software for treatment planning system, dose calculation and measurement, have to be developed, and linked to the emerging IMRT (Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy) technique and proton therapy. The expected results will improve greatly quality assurance in innovative treatments allowing more patients to be treated more consistently in hospitals with these new modalities.
The “Meet the experts” - MAESTRO workshop will present some of the tools developed within the project and the methods used for assessment. This workshop is a demonstration workshop. It should interest medical physicists, dosimetrists and oncologists who would like to exchange views.
