Alan E. Greenberg, MD, MPH
Alan E. Greenberg, MD, MPH began in August 2005 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. In 2006, he co-founded the GWU HIV/AIDS Institute, where he serves as the Co-Director. He also serves as the Co-Director of the Graduate Certificate Program in HIV/AIDS Studies. Professor Greenberg retired from a 20-year career as a Commissioned Corps Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Previously, Professor Greenberg was the Acting Deputy Director for Science for the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at CDC. He began his CDC career in 1985 as an EIS Officer in the Malaria Branch; was assigned from 1988-1993 to the AIDS Surveillance Unit at the New York City Department of Health; was the Director of CDC’s AIDS research field station in West Africa from 1993-1997; and served as the Chief of the HIV Epidemiology Branch at CDC from 1998 to 2004. In this capacity, he oversaw HIV epidemiologic research studies in 28 US States and in nine countries, which resulted in the publication of more than 375 manuscripts in the peer-reviewed literature.
Dr Greenberg received his undergraduate training at Amherst College; his medical degree from the George Washington University; and his Masters in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, has worked as a voluntary AIDS physician throughout his career, and is a Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr Greenberg was the recipient of numerous US Public Health Service Awards including two Outstanding Service Medals. He has published extensively on the epidemiology and prevention of HIV/AIDS in the United States and Africa, has co-authored nearly 100 manuscripts and textbook chapters, has served as a Senior Strategic Consultant for the WHO and is a Member of the Editorial Board of the journal AIDS.
