PPB POLICIES FOR PARENTS

Parents are strongly encouraged to set an example for their child by continuing their own religious education, either by attending a parent’s study group offered during their child’s faith formation class, for K-5 parents, or by other resources they choose to use that promote Catholic teachings and our Catholic faith AND to strive toward reading scripture on a daily basis. This last suggestion is to deepen your own faith.

Parents will be notified of behavior issues, if the disruptive behavior continues, the parent will be asked to either help the catechist with their child in class or work with them at home until the parent feels they are ready to resume classes. The reason for this action is that catechists only have a short time to present the lesson and time taken to continually address one child, is time taken away from the rest of the students.

Sacraments: One parent or sponsor or Godparent will attend class with their child to help coach their child in learning about the sacraments, to help in the development of a relationship with Jesus and to learn to implement good, faith-filled habits at home. Each student’s sponsor should attend the classes on Confirmation to help them prepare for that sacrament. Parents are also expected to accompany their child to First Reconciliation and to the First Communion Retreat. An exception to this: a Godparent may stand in if the parent is not able to attend because of work or illness.

Parents are expected to support their child in activities planned for them, these activities will be listed in the school year calendar hand out received at the beginning of the year. This is to help foster a sense of community within the church and to help teach your child how to build a relationship with Jesus through service and action.

Parents are asked to volunteer at fundraisers to benefit the Faith Formation program; this can be done by offering time or talent. When your child sees that you are supporting the program, it will help to teach them the value of team work and participation.

Parents will be asked to contribute snacks for their child’s classroom, this will be coordinated by the catechist.

Use of electronics will not be allowed in class – other than those needed by the catechist to teach class. If a child is using any electronic devices or toys in class, they will be confiscated and returned to them at the end of the class.

If a lesson has to be made up at home because of absence or illness, the parent will see that the work is completed and turned in when the child resumes classes. It will be the parent’s responsibility to get the necessary homework from the catechist. This is requested so that the child is kept up with what the other students in class are learning.

Parents will notify the Site Coordinator if their child will not be attending class because of illness or vacation, etc.

Sacraments students with excessive absenteeism will not be allowed to continue with their present class, but will be placed with the next class coming up. This is a very important time in their faith formation and they need to be well prepared for full initiation into the church. Parents also need to understand how important their role is in preparing their child to receive these sacraments and every effort should be made to attend regularly. Missing too many classes will cause the student to fall too far behind to catch up, putting them at a disadvantage and causing them to feel overwhelmed.

I hereby acknowledge that I have read, understand and will adhere to these policies.
