Summer Research Project Information

Title: Storage Area Network Research

Description: The Comptroller of the Treasury Information Technology (IT) section predicts exponential growth in network storage needs within the next three years due to the increased use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the movement of CAAS III data from the mainframe to a client server base with the implementation of CAAS IV.

The State of Tennessee Office for Information Resources has not established a standard for Storage Area Networks (SAN) to house this growing data. Other departments and agencies are using SAN technology at this time. But we know there was not an established state standard they all followed.

We need in-depth research into SAN technology available, what is currently being used in State government, and a proof of concept so we may choose the route we will take. The researcher will need to take into consideration the current capacity of our network and project expected growth in GIs and CAAS data. Also, consider other data growth as we become more paperless and begin to use document management tools available to us.

The current server room capacity is also a consideration. Depending upon the size of the SAN and expected server growth, will the current configuration suffice? If not what are alternatives? Recent articles in Computer publications predict cooling capacity of server rooms will need to be addressed as servers generate more heat. How will a SAN play into that situation?

SAN technology will introduce new equipment and software into our environment. What type training will be required for the network administrators? Will our current level of staffing be sufficient?

Student's duties and responsibilities: Research current storage technology and provide alternatives to Comptroller Assistant Director for Information Technology. Include in research information on Industry standards, trends, capacity, best practices, housing of servers, backup options, etc.
