TUTOR TRAINING FOR MATHEMATICS

Catalog Description:

15 – Tutor Training for Mathematics 1 unit

Training for college tutors to acquire specific skills and techniques for tutoring in the area of mathematics. Required for tutors participating in the Mathematics Lab and/or Math Study Groups. 1 hour

Prerequisite Skills:

None

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

1.  demonstrate increased knowledge in the theory and principles of teaching, tutoring, and learning mathematics;

2.  demonstrate increased interpersonal communication skills for establishing rapport with tutees;

3.  tutor in basic organizational and study skills as well as math-specific areas;

4.  tutor two or more students effectively in a group learning session;

5.  demonstrate familiarity with the computer and graphing calculator as a tool in improving mathematics skills;

6.  diagnose student needs;

7.  assess student learning;

8.  explain word problems;

9.  demonstrate awareness of different student learning styles.
