A conversion graph is a graph that enables people to convert quickly between two units. In this case the units we are going to use are units of currency but they could easily be between units of mass (kilograms and pounds) or length (miles and kilometres) and so on.
You are going to make a conversion graph that converts between Euros (€) and Pounds (£) and between Canadian Dollars (C$) and Pounds (£).
The data you need are recent exchange rates, given below.
This week you could exchange £1 for €1.18 or C$1.57 (correct to 2 decimal places)
First of all construct a graph to convert between Pounds and Euros.
Follow these steps:
(a)Draw the x-axis from 0 to 10, this will be the £ scale, label the axis “pounds”
(b)Draw the y-axis from 0 to 16, this will be the € scale, label the axis
(c)You are now ready to plot “co-ordinates” on the graph in the usual way
(d)For the first point plot the number of Euros that equal £1.
(e)Work out how many Euros you can buy for £10 and plot this point.
(f)Work out a suitable third point for your graph and join up the points
(g)You should now have a straight-line graph.
(h)If you don’t have a straight line, check your calculations and your plotting.
(i)Give your graph a suitable title.
Use your conversion graph to answer these questions.
- How many Euros can I exchange for £8?
- What is the value in pounds of €4 (give your answer to the nearest penny)
- How can you use your graph to work out how many Euros you can get for £50?
- I exchanged £150 how many Euros ought I have received?
- What is €250 worth in pounds?
Now construct a conversion graph to convert between Pounds and Canadian Dollars.
You need to think about these things in preparation:
(a)If you make the £ (x) scale from 0 – 10 what will be the C$ scale?
(b)How many points you plot to be sure you have a straight line.
(c)Make sure you label the axes and title the graph
Use your graph to answer these questions.
- How many C$ can you get for £9?
- What is C$20 worth in pounds?
- I exchange £250, how many Canadian Dollars should I receive
- I changed C$650 into pounds. How much did I receive to the nearest penny?
- I changed €500 that I changed into pounds, then I changed the pounds into C$, how many Canadian dollars did I receive?
Think about how you answered the last question and use a similar technique to construct a conversion graph to change between Euros and Canadian Dollars.
Use your graph to answer these questions.
- How many Euros will you expect to receive when you change C$10?
- How many Canadian Dollars is $1000 worth?
- What is the exchange rate between $ and C$?
