MATH VOCABULARY
The test will be given on Tuesday, December 8th
Denominator: The number below the fraction bar in a fraction. It stands for the total number of equal parts in all.
Example:

Equivalent fractions: Fractions that name the same region, part of a set, or part of a segment. Example: =
Numerator: The number above the fraction bar in a fraction.
It stands for the number of parts out of the whole or set.
Example:
Divide: An operation used to find the number in each group or the number of equal groups.
Algebraic expression: A group of numbers and variables that
are linked by operational signs. Example: 2 + a = 9
Like fractions: Fractions that have the same denominators. Example: and
Unlike fractions: Fractions that have different denominators. Example: and
Proper fractions: A fraction that has a numerator that is less than its denominator. It has a value that is greater than 0, but less than 1 whole. Example:
Improper fractions: A fraction with the numerator equal to or more than the denominator.
Reasonable: Something that makes sense.
Dividend: The number that is being divided into equal groups. Example: 15 ÷ 3 = 5
dividend
Quotient: The answer to a division problem.
Example: 15 ÷ 3 = 5
quotient
Divisor: The number of equal groups that the dividend is being divided into. Example: 15 ÷ 3 = 5
divisor
Divisible: A number can be divided by another number without leaving a remainder. Example: 10 is divisible by 2 because there is no remainder in the quotient.
Remainder: The amount left over after the division is complete. Example: 15 ÷ 4 = 3 with a remainder of 3
Solution: Another way of saying an answer. Example: The solution to 2 + 5 would be 7
Variable: A symbol or letter that stands for a number. Example: In the algebraic expression 7 + c = 10, the solution for c would be 3 because 7 + 3 = 10
Pattern: A group of numbers or shapes that follow a given rule. Example: In the number pattern 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 the rule would be to add two to each number.
Quantity: A certain amount of something. / Chapter 3 Science Vocabulary:
