Dear Prospective Basecamp Leader,
Wisconsin Basecamp is planningits eleventh year of offering UW-Madison incoming freshman wilderness-based orientation trips. This coming summer, the program will be accepting up to 12 groups of 9-13 students each to participate in canoeing or backpackingtrips. We are looking for motivated and competentstudents to lead these groups and welcome new students to UW Madison via a positive outdoor experience. Each trip will be five days in length. Successful Leader applicants will also be required to attend leader training (see schedule below), contribute to trip preparation, packing,post-trip gear cleanup and reporting.
Basecamp Trip Leaders play the crucial role in the success of the program and would be expected to co-lead up to four total trips. During July andAugust trips all Leaders will be responsible for trip preparations, safely guiding the group, fostering an enjoyable, challenging group environmentand conducting a planned curriculum that helps orient participants to the UW-Madison experience. Basecamp leaders must show unwavering enthusiasm, tolerance for adversity, a commitment to diversity, compassion, and have the ability to think calmly and quickly under pressure. Leaders should be competent in facilitating and teaching camping, canoeing, and backpacking skills.
Applications are due no later than 5:00pm, Wednesday, Feb 15th. Email application is preferred orhard copies will be accepted in the Outdoor UW office, Memorial Union. Early application is highly encouraged as applications will be reviewed,and qualified leader candidates interviewed (and potentially hired), in the order they are received!

What we are looking for:
A Basecamp leader should…
- Be a UW-Madison Soph., Junior or Senior in good academic standing.
- Be committed to creating a successful summer 2017 Basecamp program.
- Hold current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification or be willing to get WFA certification (April 8-9).
(Wilderness First Responder preferred)
- Be willing to work well in a variety of trip leader teams.
- Continue to share the spirit and vision of Basecamp, the Wisconsin Union and UW-Madison.
- Have good judgment and be highly safety conscious.
Basecamp Leader Expectations:
- Wilderness First Aid certified (if not we host a WFA course April 8-9 cost $170.)
- Leader training trip –~July8-16th(paid and mandatory) backpacking and canoeing camping
- Trip Leaders will participate in up to four of the 12 scheduled trips:

- $400-$450 per (5 day) trip.
- Paid training in trip facilitation.
