Teaching Assistant (Special Educational Needs)

  1. Purpose of the Job

Working under the supervision of the class teacher to provide day-to-day support for two named children. One child is in KS1, requiring speech & language support and the other in KS2, requiring speech & communication support.

  1. Applicable Contract Terms and Duties

This job description is to be performed in accordance with the Conditions of Service for non-teaching staff who are employed by Leicester City Council. This post is for 25hoursper week, during term time, but these hours will be subject to review as part of the Annual Review of the children’s Statements of Special Educational Needs.This post is temporary until 31st August 2012.

  1. Relationships

On a day-to-day basis the postholder is responsible to the child’s classteacher for her/his duties, responsibilities and tasks. She/He is expected to work as part of the team of staff who are involved with the child, including other Agencies, Support Staff and the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO).

  1. Particular Responsibilities

The school has adopted the Local Authority Job Descriptions for Teaching Assistants. The Level 1 and 2 Job Descriptions are attached. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LEVEL 2 JOB DESCRIPTION IS IN ADDITION TO THAT AT LEVEL 1. In addition to these, the following is also applicable:

a)to work individually and in groups with the children;

b)to assist the class teacher in managing the children’s work programme and supporting the children’s personal development;

c)to help prepare and review the children’s Individual Educational Plan;

d)to help with assessment of the children and to help maintain progress records;

e)to liaise with the school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO);

f)to liaise with other professionals who have involvement with the children;

g)to contribute to meetings and discussions necessary for monitoring of the children’s progress;

h)to keep in close contact with the children’s parents and/or carers and to take part in review meetings with them;

i)to have full regard for school and City Council policies and procedures as they relate to the children;

j)to have full regard for the children’s safety and welfare and to help ensure a safe learning environment;

k)to prepare materials, organise resources and carry out other classroom duties to support the children’s general education;

l)to undertake training in order to further understanding of the children’s needs;

m)to carry out other duties that are reasonably requested by the classteacher or Headteacher.

a)Speech & Language training/experience;

b)Knowledge of RML

c)Knowledge of phonics

d)Training in Better Reading Partnership
