Overview

The Ohio Department of Transportation, Office of Aerial Engineering operates and maintains a network of 52 strategically located GPS Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) in the State of Ohio, with a few stations located in Kentucky and West Virginia; these stations are providing data for post-processed and real-time positioning applications. All reference stations are network linked to a series of computers located at the State of Ohio Computing Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Data Availability

All 52 of the ODOT network CORS are currently part of the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) National CORS network. One second RINEX format GPS data is available for post processing through the NGS webpage.

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/CORS

Real-time data is available for registered users via cell phones or wireless modems.

The current RTK correction formats supported are: RTCM 2.3, RTCM 3.0 and CMR+.

GNSS Upgrade

During the first half of 2007, we began to upgrade the network by replacing our old receivers with new units that support the modernized GPS L2C and L5 signals as well as GLONASS L1/L2 signals. We currently have approximately 25 of the stations upgraded.

Cost

The annual registration/ user fee is currently $500.00 per year, per license. This fee will be used to help defray the costs associated with upgrading and maintaining the system.

Uses

The Real-Time Network can be used to/ for:

·  Automatic grade control

·  Reduction in operator fatigue

·  Cost reduction, due to decreased overlap

·  Construction staking

·  Quality control

Benefits

·  Tie all points to a permanent reference system. (State Plane Coordinate System)

·  Save time and money, increase productivity. (no need to set up and move GPS base station, radio and repeaters)

·  Quality Control. (consistent position on base)

·  Increased material utilization

·  Reduction in guesswork and costly re-work by moving dirt right the first time

Accessing and Using The Network

·  Users will need to provide their own wireless data plan and cell phone or wireless modem.
