Explanatory notes
1The following legislation and regulations must be complied with: Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; and Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995.
2Assessment against this unit standard must take place in a workplace environment. Assessment parameters will depend on company and site specific equipment, procedures, and practices. Practices must reflect industry best practice and comply with legislative requirements.
3Definitions
Company requirements include the policy, procedures, and methodologies of the company. They include legislative and regulatory requirements applicable to the company or a specific site. Requirements are documented in the company’s health and safety plans, traffic management plans, contract work programmes, quality assurance programmes, policies, and procedural documents.
Contract specifications include plans, diagrams, and special technical conditions. They do not include special administrative conditions.
Manufacturer’s instructions may include specifications, installation, handling, use and maintenance instructions, and safety data sheets.
Job instructions are those given to the operator prior to undertaking a job. They may include site safety instructions, contract drawings, and written memos.
Walk round means to walk around the machine inspecting it and its environment for hazards and removing hazards that may impair start-up.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Perform pre-start and field-servicing procedures on vehicle and broom.
Evidence requirements
1.1Walk round is completed prior to starting work in accordance with company requirements.
1.2Vehicle pre-start check is performed prior to start-up in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Rangevisibility, seat belt, engine controls and gauges, throttle position, hydraulic controls, pivot points, hot and cold checks;
check controls and gauges after warm-up.
1.3Broom is inspected for operability prior to start-up in accordance with company requirements.
Rangebristles, linkages, chains, belts and pulleys, clearances, obstructions, lubrication, hoses, bearings.
1.4Field servicing is performed on broom in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Rangefuel, oil, water, grease, hydraulic oil, minor repairs.
1.5Vehicle is checked for currency of licence and registration.
Rangeroad user charge, warrant of fitness.
Outcome 2
Confirm job instructions for sweeping.
Evidence requirements
2.1Type of surface to be swept is confirmed in accordance with job instructions.
2.2Method of sweeping is confirmed in accordance with job instructions.
2.3Removal of windrowed material is described in accordance with job instructions.
2.4Brooming sequences are described in accordance with contract specifications and company requirements.
Rangeincludes but is not limited to – sequences for intersections.
Outcome 3
Sweep surfaces with rotary broom.
Evidence requirements
3.1Surfaces are swept in accordance with contract specifications and company requirements.
Rangesurfaces include two of – first coat, reseal, base course, footpaths, existing road surfaces, running course.
3.2Sweeping to edge and sweeping to channel are demonstrated in accordance with company requirements.
3.3Windrowing to edge and windrowing to centre are demonstrated in accordance with company requirements.
3.4Dust is controlled in accordance with company requirements.
Outcome 4
Refuel, park, and inspect vehicle, and store equipment.
Evidence requirements
4.1Vehicle is refuelled and oils checked in accordance with company requirements.
4.2Vehicle is parked, shut down safely, and secured in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
4.3Vehicle is inspected and any faults or wear on bristles are reported in accordance with company requirements.
