Course Description

Spanish Intro is a course designed to teach basic Spanish vocabulary, grammar, literacy, and conversation skills to students with little or no knowledge of the Spanish language. Students will be expected to learn words from a variety of vocabulary lists. They will learn to read, write, speak, and understand some basic conversational themes. This course is preparatory to more advanced study of the language.

Class Expectations

1. Be on Time: You should be in your seat when the bell rings. Otherwise, he/she is tardly.

2. Be prepared: Have your notebook, textbook, homework and writing utensils in class every day. Do not interrupt class to inform me of your unpreparedness. Should the need ever arise; please borrow one of my pencils before the bell rings.

3. Participate: A large part of learning a foreign language is conversing in the language. Students are required to participate in class by answering questions, asking questions, singing, and participating in group activities. Please see the attached grading criteria for Participation to see how you will be graded.

4. Come to School: Success depends on active participation in the language. Therefore, attendance is very important.

5. Make-up Work: Make sure that you make up all work that you miss from being absent. You are responsible to ask me for it at the end of class. You will have the same number of days to make up work as days absent.

6. Late Work: Late assignments will not be given full credit. Late assignments are expected to be turned in the day immediately following the assigned due date. You will have a week for major assignments. You will receive 70% of the grade earned.

7. Be Honest: Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated.

8. Have Good Behavior: Above all, students should be courteous and respectful to the teacher and each other. Students should never behave in a way that disrupts the class by preventing the teacher from teaching or the other students from learning. All behavior policies will be strictly enforced.

9. Calentamiento (Bell-work): Start working on it as soon as the bell rings. It is imperative that you do the work yourself so that when we go over it you are able to see where you need help.

10. Remain in your seat at all times: Getting up from your seat for any reason without permission will not be tolerated. Please throw away your trash at the end of class.

How to Succeed in Spanish Class

--Come to class.

--Pay attention in class.

--Study each day for at least 15 minutes outside of class.

--Make flashcards (and study with them!) to help you learn vocabulary.
--Ask someone to help quiz you on your vocabulary list.

--Periodically review material from previous units.

Spanish builds on itself so you will still need to know what we’ve already learned as the year progresses. It is not wise to “cram” material in before a quiz or test. The things that you did not learn will continue to haunt you throughout the year.

-- Ask for help when you need it!

-- HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE

I am looking forward to a great year. I am so glad you are here. ¡Vamos a divertirnos!
