Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxxs

Further to your recent request for information to NHS North Yorkshire and York, I understand that the Freedom of Information Office will respond direct to you regarding the Freedom of Information elements of your request.

Please find below our response to the part of your request for information that falls outwith the Act:

“Please inform me why North Yorkshire and York PCT does not facilitate Dialectical Behavioural Therapy as an appropriate form of treatment / therapeutic intervention for people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder: Borderline Type), despite facilitating a therapeutic community programme at St Andrews, Huntington Road, York.”

The two year wait for CBT services throughout England is being addressed through the Department of Health with a view to increasing access to psychological therapy programmes. The service and its therapist leads will start in April 2010.

NHS North Yorkshire and York, with the support of NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, will start to review its talking therapies programme to look at further reducing waiting lists.

In relation to the above and your enquiry we are presently writing a strategy around appropriate services for people with a diagnosis with personality disorder.

We have also asked our professional lead in talking therapies to map the therapeutic qualifications and skills within the service and make recommendations for the future recruitment and training of our therapist to enable us to be concordant with NICE guidelines.

St Andrew's does not currently offer DBT as none of the staff are trained in this modality which requires a "whole team approach" to be effective. We currently offer a range of alternative and outcome based therapeutic approaches appropriate for individuals with a diagnosis of personality disorder and recognised within NICE Guidelines. These include individual and out patient group psychotherapy and a well respected and developing intensive group programme run as a Therapeutic Community; this service is hoping to achieve full accreditation with the RCGP Community of Communities early in 2010.

Many individuals unable to access DBT elsewhere have found their experience at St Andrew's extremely beneficial and we have a growing body of evidence to this effect from service users.

I hope you find this information helpful, however if you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely
